Reducing the usage of Plastic bags
Hi all,
Couple of months ago self decided to reduce the use of plastic bags. Have thought about it and searched around. One thing I figured out is that I use about 1 plastic bag per day. Usually when I buy milk/bread etc. So I decided to reuse the same plastic bag for my local purchase. And it works. Even though its not much I think its a start.
What do you all think any other suggestions ??
I have at least 4 empty bags in the car for Hash generated garbage!
I'm driving up and taxiing back. Milky can take me back on the way to Al Khor tomorrow.
Balderick when was the last time you cleaned your car.. lol
How you getting there tonight?

HE WHO DARES WINS
I reuse too. I've not paid for a garbage bag in years!
Until they start charging for these bags as they do now in the UK it won't even start here this environmental thing..
RP what do you save your bags for?

The one that gets my goat is the guy who gets a can of coke and a bun, puts them in a bag, then throws the bag on the floor outside the shop!
I also save them and put them to good use.. Apart from using them in "games", I put them to practical use..
I have made this chair from used plastic bags and am now working on a bed. The Chez Lounge however, wasn't a great success.
I actually do save my plastic bags, I could use them in many ways....
we re-use our plastic bags all the time,... :)
This is definitely something we need to address. I recall many times, driving out of Riyadh and seeing thousands of plastic bags wedged up against fences where the wind had blown them.
These things are like cockroaches. they don't disintegrate. we need to educate people as to the long term dangers.
Quality letter.
That's why I tell the bag packers that I'd rather do it myself.
I think a little bit of education will be required before it really catches on. Here's a funny letter to the editor from yesterday's GT.
Lol, a typical Doha experience:
Shopping lesson
Dear Sir,
I saw the advertisement “Help preserve our environment” in Gulf Times yesterday and recalled an amusing incident which happened at the weekend.
With the environment in mind, I took a large reusable shopping bag to the supermarket. On picking up my trolley, I placed the bag inside, but was almost immediately stopped by a member of the security staff who told me that I could not take the bag inside the shop, but must leave it at the security desk.
I showed him that the bag was empty and explained that I intended to use it to pack my shopping later. He was unconvinced and pointed to the security desk.
I was determined to do my bit for the environment and walked into the supermarket, with the staff member looking nonplussed, still pointing at the security desk.
I completed my shopping and on reaching the checkout placed my shopping bag on the conveyor along with some of my purchases. The checkout lady asked me if the bag was mine which I affirmed. She gave this to the assistant helping with packing, who immediately placed it into my trolley and began to pack my goods into supermarkets plastic bags. I explained that I would wish him to put my shopping into my reusable bag.
“Everything?” he asked. “Well, as much as you can,” I replied. I continued to load my goods onto the conveyor and things ran smoothly from there on.
I was pleased that I had only used two supermarket plastic bags to carry all my shopping which would normally take seven or eight supermarket plastic bags. I believed I was helping the environment in a small way.
It was only on reaching home and unpacking that I found that the packer had placed all my purchases in supermarket plastic bags before placing them into my reusable bag, negating the whole purpose of what was intended.
I learnt a valuable lesson from this exercise; I will let my wife do all the shopping in future.

Even if you don't shop at Carrefour it's worth popping in there to buy a couple of their reusable bags and then take these to whichever supermarket you usually go to. They're only a couple of riyals each and will last for ages, and think of all the plastic bags you'll save on using.
In Lulu, I tell the bagger to use just 2 bags, just to separate the toiletries and foods. I normally do my grocery every 2 weeks so I accumulate less plastics, plus it reduces impulse buying.
But now, I have a lot of plastic bags with me, I'm gonna bring them with me next time I go shopping.

Everything happens for a
reason.
I have been thinking about bringing this up for a long time.. I always carry my canvas bag with me and bag my items myself. Many places like M&S sell these bags.. pretty durable
tallg same here.
in switzerland we usually buy our shoping bags, (paper bag) for 30rappens, =like around 25cents us.
i usually went shoping with the same bag till its weak , and i put it with the newspaper for recycle.
since i moved here , i found it really careless how to they put just 3items in one bag. when i get home i dont know what to do with these bags. i now have a whole bunch of plastic bags in my kitchen.
now when i go shoping, i tell them dont worry, i will pack my own stuff.
action speaks louder than words
I agree with you tallg. I also do the same. They even want to give a polythene bag for a can of coke. But I always insist that I will not take the bag.
People are mad for plastic bags here. I've never seen so many.
The guy at my local shops tries to give me a bag for a bottle of milk, and always looks at me as if I'm mad when I say that I don't need one.
At Carrefour, they put 2 or 3 items in each bag then tie it off, so people end up with 40 or 50 bags in their trolley. It's ridiculous. I use the big reusable bags they sell and usually fill 3, sometimes 4. Far easier to handle.
They should start charging for the plastic bags.
