Qatar Nuclear Power Plan ! Russian? French?

Qatar discussed utilisation of the newly-developed Russian floating nuclear power plants (FNPP).

/

Experts point out that the Russian floating nuclear power plants are ideal for Qatar because they not only have the capability to generate electricity, but can also be used to desalinate water. This is important keeping in view that the projected daily water demand of Qatar would be about 681,000 cubic metres per day by 2012. Experts say Russian FNPP’s can supply roughly 240,000 cubic metres of water each day, which would at least partially meet the projected demand.

.......................
French power giant EDF signed a memorandum with Qatar in early 2008 for cooperation on development of a peaceful civilian nuclear power programme.

/

Initial Qatari interest in nuclear power plants has waned with the fall in international oil and gas prices, a Qatari official said in Nov. 2008.
If Qatar decided to go ahead with building a nuclear plant, feasibility studies showed it would be unlikely to bring a reactor into operation before 2018.

yes some valid points you got there, however, on the question of security of the facilities... can they be able to defend it before hand?

QATAR is too small compared to IRAN. Wherein just a drop of a sizeable amount of NUKIE may wipe out the State from the MAP, what more if the secondary or succeding explosions be triggered from these facilities, after the initial detonations??

I am imagining catasthropic eventualities if these plans manifests into reality.

And if that happens, May GOD have mercy to all the endangered souls.

A number of reasons come to mind..

Firstly, yes , they are looking for a long term sustainable solution for when the gas/oil runs out.

Secondly, they want to adopt state of the art technology with possible other uses later on :O)

Thirdly, they want to keep certain Western countries happy by buying their technology and having long term technology transfer relationships..

hmmmm, among all countries having DIRT CHEAP petrols!!

why would QATAR entertain such plans?

are they afraid the oil/LNG wells would soon run dry

or is it just to keep par with neighbor IRAN?

Qatar usually goes for "state of the art" technology. So, unless, there is a strategic decision, it would be more logical to go with the French or American design.

The word peaceful could be hijack if the state falls under a wrong hand in years to come. No body will ever knows.

I don't think people will be very happy with the idea of drinking water coming from a nuclear power plant.
