Qatar Charity initiates $50 million projects for Rohingya refugees in Malaysia
Qatar Charity (QC) and the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) have collaborated to implement projects for Rohingya refugees in Malaysia, under the $50 million grant by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The project aims to meet the health, educational and economic needs of the refugees. As of October 2019, efforts have been made to initiate health care projects with an estimated budget of $14.7 million within a period of 3 years.
The programs within its health activities include setting up five comprehensive primary health centers, operating four mobile clinics to cover the same peripheral areas inhabited by refugees, adopting the health awareness and education program for Rohingya refugees, providing necessary vaccinations for children, establishing medical shelters to receive patients who need special follow-up, and Patient Referral Program to provide appropriate medical care.
The health center was inaugurated in November 2019 and started operation in January 2020 after attaining the required permits. QC continues to set up clinics and ensure that all five clinics will be functional soon.
Medical staffs are providing free treatments to refugees in the mobile clinics and around 11,687 refugees have benefited from primary and secondary health care services and specialized medical services.
With 178,000 refugees currently registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), the programs aim to meet the primary health needs of refugees in Malaysia.
