The truth behind http:// and https://

every_mothers_nightmare
By every_mothers_n...

The main difference between http:// and https:// is, It's all about keeping you secure

HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients.

The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".

If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language.

In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website.

If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever ever enter your credit card number in an http website!

But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

You understand why this is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.

If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number!

HH, if you visit the Home Page of CBQ to browse general information about the bank you will find http:// but if you will use their Internet Banking site you will find that the address begins https://cbonline.cbq.com.qa

The eye icon that u were saying is another thing. That shows how your computer handles cookies.

Not all pages in a website though can practically be viewed over a secured connection. A secured connection is usually served only on pages where u need to enter personal information. Ur browser knows that u r viewing a secured portion of a website, and u will know it because a gold padlock appears on the browser's information bar. U can click or double-click that padlock icon to verify if the webpage's certificate was issued by a valid source. Otherwise, u r left with the website's Disclaimer/Privacy Policy to evaluate if u should share your personal data over the Internet.

I've researched some sites, including banking, UN and more sites. I found they started with http, not https?

http://www.cbq.com.qa/ ??

Also, there are sites with a small eye and lock at the bottom of the page, isn't this a security feature?

Not all websites under https are secured though. In https, communication works together with SSL that takes the data and encrypts it, or hides the true meaning of the data. Encryption is made possible by certificates which can either be purchased from authorities (like Verisign), purchased anywhere, or made by anybody. So take a moment to check the validity of the website's certificate first before sharing any confidential data over the internet. Common information a valid certificate contains are issuer of the certificate, the name of the website, the certificate's period of validity, and the server that hosts the website. Hmm..

Is that right? does that mean QL is not secure? Including all the PM content and all.

http://www.qatarliving.com/...?

It's a public site anyway. No sensitive info should be transferred via PM or any other feature on QL.
