QTel Mobile Broadband - Has anyone used it??

Hi,

I'm new in Qatar and am looking to setup an internet connection for my apartment.

The fixed line ADSL connection seems quite expensive, so I have been looking at 3G type mobile broadband with USB dongle modem. The Qtel prices for this mobile broadband are similar to setup with ADSL connection and modem.

I have used this type of 3G connection in the UK, and the speed can be quite slow and the coverage is not great.

I am wondering if anyone has used Qtel's mobile broadband service and can give me any comments on the coverage and speed in Doha, especially in the Al Saad area.

Thanks,
Tom

Would it not be of greater benefit to use a mobile broadband that plugs directly into the USB socket as this uses satellite rather than phone cable and so is more reliable and can be used in places that usually suffer with poor or little signal. The family needs a reliable source as the internet is an invaluable tool for education. ADSL is way cheaper, but not as reliable. If you are on the move I would use the mobile broadband.

fixed ADSL line is a better option tom, ive tried it before.. trust me... it's possible that you can have excess payments with mobile broadband, since it's not unlimited unlike with ADSL line.

QTel broadband (USB modem) is good if you're in a constant mobile and want to access the internet, and fixed line ADSL I think is much more cheaper.

If you are looking for a reliable and fast broadband internet connection then usually ADSL connection is faster as compared to mobile broadband. For 3G type mobile broadband with USB Broadband dongles modem you'll have to see what speed they are offering.

Hi, I have an Orange USB modem which I used in the UK - Its an ICON 225 - Does anyone know if this will work with Qtels Sims or do I need to splash out on Qtels own Modem. I know I had to unlock my orange phone for it to work here but wondered if the modem might work?

Hi,

Can I use my 3G phone e.g. Nokia N95 as a modem and connect my laptop with it? I know I will need postpaid subscription, but can I save 800 QR by not buying a modem and use my phone instead?

Is the dongle USB powered? YES

How is it billed - Pre-paid or Post Paid? POST PAID

How much does the dongle cost? QAR 800 HERE OR £50 UK

I have both Qtel ADSL (lowest speed at QAR 200 pm) and mobile internet dongle (QAR 100 pm). I dont see any difference in the speed.

Its' cheaper to buy the dongle in the UK and modify it for use in Qatar.
