QATAR.....'Dull as Dishwater???'

Hi all,

I am living in Thailand but may have an opportunity to work in Qatar.
However, having heard many conflicting things, i am still very much in two minds.
I even met a Saudi last evening in Bangkok - and his opinion on Qatar - 'Dull as dishwater'.........can anyone give me some honest feedback on life on Qatar?..Finding info seems almost impossible!

Thanks in advance,

RP

yep guys, Thailand is pretty awesome, very cheap, even though as a foreigner you have to pay double or even ten times more to visit places, yet this still equates to pretty cheap. Im a teacher here with an opportunity to go to Qatar....mainly for the tax free salary in the hope of paying off my Thai mortgage in a few years...even though,..a social life is damned important for an expat anywhere......so i guess ill just have to keep on weighing the pros and cons..thanks all.

I love Thai snack! the food is awesome and the owners so nice. It's the only place in Doha where I feel any authenticity. For an hour or two I feel like I'm out of Doha and back in Thailand. I even talk to them in thai (well hello and thank you)..lol....but they really appreciate it...Oh has anyone seen the gorgeous black & white cat?....is sooo friendly!

Yes, what you mentioned above is true but it is not like this is an Apartheid state or something.

i know you live in totally the other side of Doha. But if you come from your area to the C ring road, past toys r us ... then Mc.D then Hardees on your right. Turn right on the road exactly after Hardees. After about 200 or 300 metres you will see a sign of Thai Massage on the left... Thai Snack is in the same place. Now it is call Amjad.Try it ... dead cheap there ... Very authentic ... thai owner and thai waitress. So authentic sometimes the waiter dont speak a single english ... but hey ... dont let the language barrier make you down hehe...

i second you e4, we been to most places in Doha. The only things what make it different we normally always meet up with new ppl. Some you dont like it and never meet them again, and some you like and become your best friends for years. :-)

QL is the BEST source of info on Qatar than any other. I am in Doha for the last 10 days. I have been places that I learned from QL discussions I was following a few weeks before I arrived. Believe me I knew exactly where I was coming. Furthermore QL is an amalgamation of so many different opinions so in a way makes it objective. It is, let say the collective wisdom or insanity of its members lol

May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends below never fall out!

You are from Thailand right?? Well,As past experience, I have alot of colleagues from Thailand and they are always complaining about Qatar, i.e., no enjoyment or whatsoever., so they gone back home because of boredom. So if I were you, i have to compare my needs and wants.. (i hope you get it well).

It's pretty obvious that you cannot compare Qatar to Thailand... so impossible to compare >>> the leisure/geographic and enjoyment BUT if you are looking for opportunities, Qatar is NOT a BAD option.. so dont jump immediately then suddenly crying out..

Try to visit some other topics here in QL (old ones) and you will learn alot about the rules here and alot more..

Well the drinking spots are defintely holes....the live music is beyond awful and most people try to avoid the spots that play it...or at least I do, and the cultural stuff....there's some of it, it's due to be open by Christmas 2008.

Don't expect much in terms of galleries and museums.

There are drinking holes. You make your group of friends/acquaintances and do things with them.

People don't come here to broaden their cultural horizons, unless taking in the miscellany of nationalities qualifies.

A Saudi commenting on Qatar? Hilarious.

Qatar is what you make of it. There are more freedoms in Qatar today than Saudi Arabia has seen in 50 years.

Don't expect the hubbub of Bangkok or cosmopolitanism of London. But you can still enjoy yourself.

ROFL, a Saudi called Doha "Dull as Dishwater" what does that make Saudi? Dull as normal water? (groans please for very bad joke).

No worries rpmba, Doha is slightly more exciting then Dishwater. But only slightly.
