Police Brutality in Qatar!?
Hello all, since i'm not really keen with the country's laws & regulations to such matter, i would really appreciate everyones comments/feebacks/& pointers to help me try & gain justice on how i've been treated the last few days being in the custody of the capital police station.
I'm a Canadian man, who is working for one of the lead banks in the country with a managerial position for the past 4 years and maintains a clean record and not really into problem making or such matters, especially in this region. I have been through a conflict thursday night with the police leaving one of the top hotels in doha where my friends & I were attacked by a bunch of intoxicated young men waiting at the lobby, and I basically tried to defend ourselves to prevent any harm being from happening to us. the cops later showed up and pushed me forcefully to the vans in an extreme inhumane manner without even knowing the story or even reading my rights before they twisted my arm and shattered my elbow bones trying to put me in handcuffs, because I politely refused to get in the car until explained the reason of my arrest.
As per the common law in most foreigner countries and where im from, I need to be explained the reason of the arrest when arrested and entitled for 1 phone call that they never gave me! they took away everything from me and threw me in a jail cell with a broken arm for 12 hours before i seen i doctor and no food for 2 days!!!! when i would tell the officers that im starving and thirsty, they would say "ok ok" just to shut me up and i never would see them again. i had to survive off of the other prisoners who felt sorry for me and gave me their food that they've saved earlier. meanwhile qatari prisoners were treated VIP & put in better lock downs and got whatever they asked for!! they have accused me of resisting to cooperate and alleged drinking after they seen that they broke my arm. however, they asked a blood sample from me to prove i wasn't drinking that i refused to take!! i asked them to take a Breathalyzer test or a urine test to illustrate my condition but i will not allow your filthy clinic to inject a needle in my body after seeing how you authorities operate!
If the authorities treated me in an inhumane manner arresting me and bringing me in without justice served, while i've experienced nothing but racism and emotional distress, can i ask for my rights and contact my embassy or just shut up & suck it up instead of making it a big issue on my behalf then get stuck in the country!
i would appreciate everyones feedback and comments on what i should do in this matter. thanks
police here especially the CID guys are really like that.. but unfortunately for them.. they have been trying to outsmart me but the smart could never be second best..lol..
i know the jail.. its the one in Al Sadd... with 4 cells and closed doors with one non-english speaking warden... and thats true, they just say yes and yes even without understanding it.. so you could have asked them " are you moron?" then youll get the best answer of "YES" lol..
See Dangilo I think You Should Go to NHRC Stirctly
Interesting, there is no Canadian embassy here and I would suggest you look up the word flabbergast, you're using it incorrectly.
dangilo...good to know that things are getting somewhere.... but how would you respond to the post of "ghahat" on the previous page.
This is what he wrote:
"ghahat said ...
wow, you are spewing so serious Bullshit.
first of all, there are camera's in the lobby of The W. if you were defending yourself, you think the police will hold you????
dont you think the police already got the video tapes from the security of THE W.
i am also canadian and the police will not do this to you for no reason jackass.
those "intoxicated young men" are my friends and your friends attacked them.
that is why the valet parking guy pointed at you for the police.
are you seriously trying to say men you dont know attacked you in the lobby of the W!!! you know them well, and you attacked them for a reason.
but at least you got your ass beat by them and the police in public."
wow alot of ppl have quite some bullshit to say. no need to prove a point since some are certainly flabergasting. I haven't been on here for a few days due to the fact that i've been running around fighting for my rights. and i'm glad its getting somewhere and even the authorities wanted me to drop the charges, but the embassy has already started doing its part and we won't go easy on the oppressors.
p.s. i'm 100% native canadian who found my way to islam a few years back, so if anyone has anything ignorant to say, keep them to yourselves.
I try to imaging what the police got... A report about a fight between drunkards... they come to the scene and find you RESISTING ARREST ... They try their best to arrest you, you show FORCE, they show MORE FORCE in order to arrest you.
It seems to be your fault...
Miranda rights? Phone call? In any country other than the US? Are you drunk now?
P.S. Do you look "Indian-Like"? If you do, the report would be that it is a bunch of Indian drunkards fighting.
Why an exclamation & question marks in the title.
1....Is Dangilo not sure of brutuality?
2....If he is honest and NOT guilty then he should come out to defense/clarify his case.
Here's a wikipedia (you can take that at face value) link to the Canadian "equivalent" of Miranda rights
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miranda_warning Miranda as is the Canadian "equivalent" is a warning to the person being detained that they have the right NOT TO INCRIMINATE themselves, they also have the right to be told "promptly" what they are being charged with and they have the option of legal representation.
In this case and in this country I have no idea what "rights" this OP has but in Canada and the US - he does not have the "right" to be informed of the charge or to disregard police instructions at the time he is detained.
In other words, we have to sit down and shut up until and unless we are formally charged (and that's not when you're arrested) and choose for legal representation.
its funny how everybody aroused animosity over 1 persons comment not knowing if its true or not. I don’t care who got their ass beat but we all forgot the topic was about police brutality over here not who won the fight! I’m an American myself and can relate to the story. I’ve been in a similar situation with the authorities before and justice was not served, plus Its true that this place is nepotistic and xenophobic. Don’t let those men in uniform take over you. Complain and fight for your rights.
Anyway whatever transpired there in the W it was probably very violent and unpleasant. Maybe he had his reasons. Well may he have some good sense in future.
My doubt started when he said he is Canadian. His English is not good, even if adjusting for anger and rushed typing. Now, he could have immigrated to Canada and become a citizen. Or he could be "reinventing" himself here. Either way, cause for doubt.
Well if you remember last night I expressed my doubts right away and when Colt and you were more inclined to believe the story, I just kept my mouth shut. That is why I was very keen to see a post stating otherwise as I am rarely mistaken.
I was keeping an eye on this since morning because one needs to know if I had made a mistake in my judgement and perceptions.
I love "W and Wahm mysterious fights".....deserves the proper treatment!
Being a Canadian; holds an upper hand; MAN fight for your Rights till the deportation order delivered against YOU!
All the best :)
Absolutely Khawaga. The thing that was not feeling right was the broken elbow and the blood test. An elbow cannot be broken unless there was considerable force and refusal for a blood test was a little strange. And I did sense him assaulting someone there.
Mehnis: generally speaking, anyone who comes and complains so vehemently in such a public forum about such a transgression isn't telling the whole story. At least, this has been my experience. We once had a woman (this goes back to my restaurant days) who tried to raise a big stink that she had to wait for a table. She tried to say that we were racist. Truth is, she came in with no reservations on a busy night in the middle of the rush. We had to accommodate reservations first. Then she started a scene and we finally refused to serve her and had her removed. Are we racist? No. But there is a way to behave and a way not to behave.

The case is not as straight forward as you made it to be. If there is any evidence or eyewitness against you;I recommend you keep quite about the whole issue and do not get into NHRC support and a counter argument with the police. Accept that it was your bad day and move on. You will be faced with counter charges of attack and creating nuisance in public let alone resisting arrest. It will be more difficult for you to get out of all the trouble coming your way.
I had doubts on the actual incident and your side of the story but then I felt it necessary to point out the flaws that plagues Qatar's Law Enforcement. I stand by my comments on those issues but I do not stand by your side of the story anymore.
To emphasise,my point is, you'll be better off without escalating this issue any further.
Mehnis: That's fine. I'm a simple girl and I've learned that if I just sit in one place long enough, entertainment will just show up.
The afternoon soap opera?
A belly dancing performance on the side could also be nice.
I am all eye and ears :)
Bobcorn and Bebsi :)
There was serious short-comings in the OP. Lets see if QL judges can deliver the veridct.
I love QL :)
We have quite a spread here: popcorn, candy, soda, a freeloader, entertainment... who could ask for more? lol
I have been waiting for a post like ghahat's since last night. There was a lot amiss in this story. Looks very likely his elbow was broken in the fighting and not while being handcuffed.
I'll just freeload off all 3 of you :)
Khawaga, Templar I am bringing Coke (The soft drink :D)
Templar: I'll share my candy if you share your popcorn!
dangilo..weird u said u were totally sober ur a muslim u dont drink but all islam tells us that even if u r not drinking once u r in a place that has got alcohol then its pretty much the same sin :) and such behavior from the police here wouldnt happen..tell u the truth they wouldnt go through all this trouble by putting u in jail and i dont know what they would just simply cancel you sorry a** out of the country

I knew there was something fishy with the initial post. And now the drama begins.

I guess it all depends on how you want to deal with the situation.. the recourse could be worse than the experience in my opinion. Sometimes raising a fuss, even if it is a well deserved fuss.. can create further problems.
That said, if you have the resources at your disposal to hire an attorney and seek legal counsel, I would by all means see it through. It is always helpful to report this to the Canadian embassy as they will at least offer insight as to future course of action.
I have had my own misfortune of being mistreated by Qatar Police. So while I remain sympathetic, I also know that you have to put a realistic perspective on the outcome of your action in a judicial(hardly) process that is ultimately corrupt, nepotistic, and xenophobic.
These constant sickening displays of Qatari elitism, and power tripping are so pathetic to me.. i really loathe the country and all it has come to represent. If there was one mistake i made in my dealings with police.. it was not punching out the weak excuse for a man that called himself an officer.
Alot of the top hotels have surveillance cameras. Ask a lawyer to go with you and get a copy.
You can file a complaint at http://www.nhrc-qa.org/en/contact.php. Justice shall be served.
something is missing here
If what you narrated is true and you have the parking manager who witnessd the whole drama to support, take it up with NHRC.
the more you resist the more you get beaten up!
You have Canadian nationality but English is NOT your first language. Strange are your parents Muslim?
In Canada, you don't argue with the police when they tell you to do something - you cooperate, especially if there's been some kind of dust up.
Well, I'm from the US and if you "politely refused" to follow a cop's orders here you'd be in pretty big trouble, too! And even in the US you can be restrained before you are read your Miranda warning. I kinda doubt that the thingy about a phone call and being told what your reason for arrest is universal. That said, you certainly should have had immediate treatment for the broken elbow. What ended up being the charges against you? I think I'd explore that with an embassy lawyer before going the brutality route.
Mandi
Are you a Canadian of immigrant parents ???
@ dangilo,if the above incident occured exactly as you narrated above, your rights were violated(although i have to admit i find the 2 days no food story a bit much to digest)...*wink*!!! especially since Capital is the short-stay eh?...
To be honest with you ,, its sad to hear such kind of story .
but if i was in your place .. i would go to the embassy and they can do somthing ..
Qatay laws are firm and fair .. trust me .. if you have some rights they will give it to you
very strange... but actually there is a lot you can do about it if you are honest about every part of the incident. however, racist treatment in jail cells is apparently something that is practiced. as a matter of fact its practiced everywhere in Doha.
You should report this to NHRC,,the lawyer there would fight for you...however, i feel its better to consult with you embassy first. Atleast, they should standby you incase you seek help.
2 days without food is indeed brutal.!!! I've always known the prisoners eat very good food, the same what the cops eat......this is the first time i hear a different story.
they picked me because everyone who assaulted us left the scene, meanwhile we stood there knowing that the authorities will be on our side which apparently was the wrong assumption. the valley parking manager pointed at me to the officers i guess to try and get a story out of me in regards to what have happened, instead i get assaulted by the authorities. theres no need for me to lie and waste my time writing about such things if i really wasn't mistreated and oppressed by the law. i will definitely give nhrc a visit tomorrow and approach a legal consultant.
complain
I do ;)
my right hand?
remember Al Bundy's favorite position :)
LIL HELP:
We gave him the best advice and put him to bed... ;-)
And btw, I'am not questioning his story's credibility in any way.
I think the weather will be great at that time too... ;-)

common' guys..maybe it's true!
...let' us give him some good advices or leave him alone!
(i am using my LEFT hand right now!)
Well it's kind of weird if they picked on you though you weren't intoxicated and others were. As suggested go to NHRC, their office is on Salwa road, just before Midmac roundabout coming from Ramada signal.
you better get some sleep now, or else they will say you over-worked your arm typing on QL and that is why you had broken bones... :-P
Good Luck buddy!
Got to catch som e sleep now. MAybe we should start the early morning strolls and coffee meetups at corniche soon ;) Between 2 and 3.00 in the morning should be fun.
They need to follow their duty rather than try and act as if they are NYPD or FBI. Too many action and thriller movies have destroyed their already limited education starved grey cells.
Great minds think alike ;-)
for 'typing' out your story with a broken arm :D I believe you completely.
i agree. will try to do that 1st thing tomorrow.
thanks friedunicorn & genesis. i'm glad someone sees something wrong with it
I do agree with FU... get the NHRC involved and see how it goes. You don't have an embassy here yet, so I guess that is your best bet for now.
responsible as much as we are. Look at the statistics and tell me if english education must be made compulsory or not. If you are responsible for the safety of expats as well, who form the 70% of your population, you better know english. If you can't understand/speak the language of the majority of your audience - what good can you do? Probably you should be replaced with an expat force then who can communicate atleast.
Lack of knowledge can never be an excuse. In this case, I suggest NHRC's full involvement and the perpetrators be brought to trial.
What are you gonna do about them chewing tobacco? I mean really, are you more worried with that or the way you were treated?
And don't tell me Canadian cops don't smoke a joint when they have tummy pain... lol that is the lamest excuse for a joint :-P
Consult a local Lawyer & report your incident to NHRC

speaking of which, i did over hear them talk about WWF fights and who they cheer for, which i found childish and ignorant knowing that WWF is not even real! and i believe that chewing tobacco or at least something that looked like it, is illegal. i found it offensive seeing men in uniform taking such things and talk about useless matters just to kill time
What happened to his friends ?? who were they and what happened to them??
of this country sleep peacefully when they know that the security of their country is in the hands of novice college drop outs who chat away on their phones while driving and who give sly looks to the women folks. These guys need basic courses in communication let alone the human rights lectures and higher learning in social responsibility. I feel sad looking at these grinning young kids in uniforms at times.
Something amiss here FU
they admitted me to the hospital after 12 hours of pain and after 2 x-rays to make sure that im not lying, they got the reports that i do have a broken arm. even the doctors and high ranked police officers said for me not to go quite, but from the prosecution centres point of view, i see otherwise.
and I suggest you contact the NHRC immediately. You have been severely mistreated and you should fight it out. Don't let the thugs in uniforms get away with this.
Sorry I missed that. Since it was so long I just scanned it. My mistake but the situation does not change. He cannot prove they broke his arm
I think the more you resist and try and throw some weight around, the more they get pissed off at you and will act funny with you.
That is what could have happened to him. He said he was sober, he's muslim.
Sounds a bit strange for a white to be dealt in such a manner. Looks like you went overboard with the fighting and ofcourse being drunk. Maybe you slammed some important chap or his son. I would suggest that you go to your embassy and see what happens.
As for rights you have none. Up to you to suck it up and stay or leave. You will lose more by going against anyone.
For starters did you get yourself admitted to a hospital as soon as you were released?? because proof of the cause of the broken bones lies with you.
catch 22 situation pal... you blow it up, they will make your life a living hell. On the other hand, you keep quiet and it will mess with your head that you didn't do shit about it.
I hear you, but all I can say at this point is I feel for the agony you went through. I hope you get better... time heals!
no i've been locked up for a little over 2 days. I'm a muslim and was in total sober condition
you were in jail for 12 hours and without food for 2 days??..why didnt u eat after coming out of the jail..i guess mental trauma might have decreased your hunger...but dude, fight for what is important for you.
I have never been mistreated by the cops here, were you drunk?
