By JoPo

I'm thinking of giving my maid a pay raise and wondering how much should I be paying her. For all QLers with live-in maid, can you pls share how much you are paying ?

Do you provide them air-ticket to go back home ? If yes, how often ?

Thanks for sharing

A piece of advise for those generous people who send their maid home twice a year or who give her business class tickets. Ask your maid if she prefers cash. Most of them are here to earn enough to buy a land, a house, or something else in their home town. Buying a business class ticket may help you feel good about yourself but it does not help the maid.

My maid has kids back home and still she preferred cash after a year when we asked her if she wants to go back for a month with paid leave.

So, if you want to be nice to your maid, pay her more.

And also, can someone mention a name of agency that charges 6000-7000 QAR. I paid 9500 last year plus the visa cost plus medical, photograph, RP etc. I even had to buy her clothes and shoes after she arrived.

JoPo...I go home 6-7 times a year, so less than 3 times for the maid sounds cruel to me, same as I may be considered a cruel employer by some who pay QR 3000/- as I would like to pay QR 1500/-. BTW some of my trips out of those are just for a week (9 days to be precise)...:)

MM...that's right...:)

here's a wheeze of an idea..

Write down different amounts on 4 different pieces of paper. (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%)

Fold them and put in a bowl

Get the maid to pick out one - and go with it :O)

Does your maid want to go home once a year? Ours just wants money in lieu, so that's what we do (tends to work out a bit cheaper to).

I think happy was being sarcastic. I only know one person who sends their maid home twice a year, and that's only because she has young children.

Happygolucky : I go back once a year and most of the work force here get 30 days annual leave. Isn't it a bit too much to send my helper back 3 times a year while each trip needs at least 2 to 3 weeks ?

Cant say about how much rise and all is good as it depends on several factors but once a year ticket sounds cruel. Atleast 3 tickets a year should be a must.

Why don't you give her one month salary as yearly bonus this will sure motivate her to do work much better.

Business class for maid... the most idiotic thing I've heard today. What next? A rolex watch every 3 years instead of a hike? I'm sure she'd need extra cash as bonus rather than wastage on a business class ticket.

Instead of getting your maid a business class ticket why dont you get her an economy ticket and give her as bonus what you saved. Im sure she would appreciate that more.

I know there is a vast different in pay scales here that's why I posted this question. I dont want to short change her neither do I want to pay more than what she deserve. After all, we are all here for money.

I'm willing to pay if she is a great help but unfortunately she is not. My kids are old enough to take care of themselves and I'm the one take care of them most of the times anyway. Her job is cleaning and cooking. After I gather as much information, I think I will pay her average.

Thank you for sharing.

Try to give a ticket every year... especially if she has kids at home! Can you just imagine 1 second not being able to see your kids for 2 years...???

The UAE also requires a ticket home per year, not every 2 years.

Is she just a maid or does she take care of your children as well?

We pay ours 2200, give her Friday and Saturdays off and a ticket home once a year.

Thanks Qatar_Uk. I'm paying my maid 1000 now and she been with us for almost 3 years. Sent her back after 2 yrs but not in business class though :)

Have you heard of Philippines government is negotiating for a minimum of USD400 per mth in middle east countries ? They have already gotten consensus in HK, SG and the rest of the Asia countries and have signed the agreement if I'm not wrong.

I hope to hear more from QLer so can decide what to do :)

Rise between QR100-QR200

Contract says she could go back home in 2 years and she has the right to return or not.

And yes, after 2 working years, you provide them with the tickets. Depending wither if she's really good or not, we would book her a business class ticket just to make her sure that we need her back.

My other maid is getting 800, and she worked for one year and several months.

The First one when shes coming, we will be paying her between 900-1000
