Not sure if I will like Qatar

Privet
By Privet

Hi there all I have been reading your forums trying to get an idea of what life is like in Qatar. I have the offer of a job out in Qatar which would involve work outside and in a porta cabin office on site - even in the summer!

Myself I like to play a little golf, do some training enjoy walking nice scenery, weekends go to the bars etc, definately need to find a lady out there to keep sane, well thats basically it. Is there plenty of women out there? That is the quesion.

Now Doha seems to fit that lifestyle very well, however from what I read in most of the posts is that once you get there it is quite interesting, but say after a month people start to get bored and down hill from there - it seems a really small place where everyone will soon get to know each other, but after a while it starts to drive you crazy - at least that is what I am picking up.

The problem I face is that I would not be returning home for up to 12 weeks at a time which I find a little too long. I have not made up my mind yet, I may love it or on the other hand not. I know people who have worked in Abu Bhabi quite like it there, how does Doha compare and how would you sum it up for some one like me, who does tend to get bored of routine.

Thanks, Privet.

car is a necessity otherwise you would be at the mercy of your friends who could give you a lift and getting driver's license is not quick. as everyone said if you would love your job and have a lot of friends as you can then you would be fine.

... JBH

As for my suggestion that I was really not going with the double entendres,

I can see you didn't take it lying down.

But not all of us can be as good as you as a cunning, I mean, a clever, er, langauge specialist.

As for me, sad to say (although I suppose at least it marks me as someone safe and boring enough to help the Doha nice guy quotient), I really want to know where I can get some actual pie, which I've been craving ever since I chanced upon this thread. I'm not looking for anything, er, organic, just something other than the apple pie I've seen at Megamart or the pecan cake at the One. Anyone know anyplace?

I suppose when Paul opens at Villagio, perhaps, they'll have chausson aux pommes, at which point I'll be there, helping to chase away the people trying to take inappropriate photos of folks like Gypsy (keep your lenscaps on, guys).

"Sorry if I'm hurting the spirit of this thread by not joining in on the double entendres, but..."

Double entendres and not important to this thread.

Just share your point of view.

As long as you come accross with a nice firm one.

You give it to us all hard if you want.

Or go for the more gentle approach.

Some even prefer a post with a bit of spunk as the Americans say.

Personally I find it hard to swallow.

As for pies, the chice is vast but I really like a nice pair, oops pear, most of all.

It dun't really matter.

By lawprof• 4 May 2007 15:35
lawprof

Sorry if I'm hurting the spirit of this thread by not joining in on the double entendres, but...

... is there actually a good place in Doha to get pie, whether it be apple, cherry, rhubarb, or anyone else's favorite flavor. I love Arabic sweets, but it's been a long time since apple or cherry pie.

Avid,

when I get the word I will be coming out to Doha, I hear what people are saying but I've dealt with boredom, travelling to London waiting in traffic jams for hours Monday morning and returning home Friday is boredom, Guest houses in Aberdeen is boredom, fact is I'm bored shitless tonight.

Feelings are mixed, same the world over, I've heard enough now. New subject, "have you been to any good house parties", tell us about that, dare I ask?

In the end I just did it. Privet I am late to this conversation, Most people have said. I would just do it. I don't regret moving here one bit. I lived in London and was sick of the tube and the weather and the routine.

Ok so now I have a routine but I also have more money, more time to myself a fiancee (who I met here its not that hard).

Two cars

Loads of great friends

If you like your job, make friends you will be fine.

The Club used to be called "The British Club" but now is open to all.

To the right of Port Zaid Road and can just about be seen from the Abu Dhabi Mall.

Beer is cheap (don't know about now but it never cost more than AED 9 for a pint of Boddies, John Smiths or Guinnessin 2002 (AED 7 on Fridays).

Excellent food, especially the Bistro on Thursday evenings.

Great beach, tennis etc.

Cheapest for draught beer was the Corniche Club (attached to the Corniche Hospital)

Dweller,

what is "The Club" I visited Abu Dhabi two years back, seemd OK. Can see the monotinous factor as they are small places, don't look too much into my routine business, to an extent that's life. I live in a small village, so not too much going on here, nowadays I move about a lot more into the city's it's more interesting, however everywhere has a down side. Work days of course it dosen't pay to go OTT, although I often do.

The community sounds good there though!

Alexa,

if I ever get there, and things are moving slow at the moment, normal for the region, you will be invited to my house party!

Routine, I agree with.

Golf courses there is one grass and two sand courses. The sand courses are in my opinion friendlier, certainly cheaper and as enjoyable as the grass course.

You haven't travelled much if you have only found 4 decent beaches.

House parties were the only way before the bars opened.

Abu Dhabi is better but can get just as "boring" although they have "The Club"

I've been to worse places then. But the only way to find out if I can maintain a life out there is to come and try, like you people did. In all seriousness Privet, coming here isn't so bad, but it isn't so great either. There's loads of money and you can live a pretty sweet life style that you get used to pretty quickly. Hanging out at 5 star hotels does grow on you, and you can travel to a lot of different places from here.

That being said, the social life is awful. Take a vow of chasity before you come here, no insult to you, but the chances of you actually finding a women here are slim to none, most are either married or (like myself) very very wary of the men here and don't tend to frequent the bars are any other social place without bodyguards, and are liable to be pretty snotty to you if you try and approach us at a bar.

Also, if you are in Oil and Gas you'll more than likely be travelling between Doha and Ras Laffan everyday. I've been in Ras Laffan in 50 degree heat watching the camel spiders skitter around. I don't want to go back.

Privet, your last words "who does tend to get bored of routine" well you pretty sure to get a routine here i'm afraid. I skipped most of the posts so apoloies if somebody already said this.

There is 1 good golf-course, 3 night clubs (of sorts), 95% male dominated social gatherings, 4 good beachs, a few different malls with the same shops most of the time, very few independant resturants (non of which sell alcohol or our pink friend)..... need i go on. House parties is the way forward here.

Adu Dhabi is way better, and if you get bored Dubai or Oman is a drive away.

Somebody said teenagers like Doha???? Reality check needed there.

Cheers,

By Privet• 3 May 2007 15:24
Privet

Absolutrossk,

How long have you been out there, and are you packing it in?

If I came I would have a hefty living allowance that would more than cover the living arrangements, and any social activity + a damn good salary too.

Too much heat there for a spell, too much cold and wind here, nothing to do here, nothing to do there, so I'm thinking better to be bored and loaded than bored and skint.

Come on people. Unless you make a fair amount of money, have a car and accomodation paid for life here would be unbearable.

The cost of living is through the roof! Housing, golf & other recreational activities, food, eating/drink out is all expensive as hell and getting worse.

Oh yeah and when I said recreational activities i couldnt actually think of any others apart from golf as there really is a lack of things to do here.

Oh...did I mention the heat?

Verdict: Stay away!

By Greeker• 2 May 2007 20:19
Greeker

A pie is a baked food, with a baked shell usually made of pastry that covers or completely contains a filling of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, cheeses, creams, chocolate, custards, nuts, or other sweet or savoury ingredients. Pies can be either "one-crust," where the filling is placed in a dish and covered with a pastry/potato mash top before baking, or "two-crust," with the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell. Some pies have only a bottom crust, generally if they have a sweet filling that does not require cooking. These bottom-crust-only pies may be known as tarts or tartlets. An example of a bottom-crust-only pie that is savoury rather than sweet is a quiche. Tarte Tatin is a one-crust fruit pie that is served upside-down, with the crust underneath. Blind-baking is used to develop a crust's crispiness, and keep it from becoming soggy under the burden of a very liquid filling. If the crust of the pie requires much more cooking than the chosen filling, it may also be blind-baked before the filling is added and then only briefly cooked or refrigerated. Pie fillings range in size from tiny bite-size party pies or small tartlets, to single-serve pies (e.g. a pasty) and larger pies baked in a dish and eaten by the slice. The type of pastry used depends on the filling. It may be either a butter-rich flaky or puff pastry, a sturdy shortcrust pastry, or, in the case of savoury pies, a hot water crust pastry.

I can read, and since posting here noticed that you hang onto every word of every post looking for offense, then return by insult. Slightly paranoid disorder with a dislike of the male gender.

You certainly have a low opinion of the men out in Qatar and me, although you don't know me.

As for middle aged fat men who can't make it in their own country whom you suggest go to Qatar, I disagree. Have you ever seen the criteria for engineering professionals in Qatar, obviously not!

Learn to read Privet instead of just trying to insult me, I specifically said the CHinese pros, not all the Chinese girls. As for where they hang out, everyone knows where the pros hang out, you aren't here yet but I'm sure it will be the place you make a beeline too since you're so desperate for women. As for western pros, haven't come across any yet, not really popular here I guess, but since you think so lowly of Western women I can't see why you would care.

I wasn't being intensionally offensive, and I apologise to Chinese people if they were offended, however a fact is, that is what we call Chinese people in Britain, I don't care what they call us Brits in China or in Qatar.

To suggest that the Chinese ladies in Qatar are all prostitutes is insulting. And yes, I do like Chinese ladies but would not be prepared to pay for them. Not nearly as brash ladies.

I find it suspicious that you know where all the pros hang out, especially the Chinese you mention. I wonder where the western pros hang out, I guess you'll know!

Excellent use of the derogatory term chinks. You will fit in here, with the rest of the overweight middle aged men who couldn't make it in their own country. There's a place called Garvey's you should look into, and of course the Oasis where you'll find your chinks.

Hi mate,

I agree it's good to just give it a shot, only hesitant as my last few encounters with work have not worked out, not because of the place but becasue of EPC firms not getting the work they told me they had, or not being organised. I wouldn't think twice but there are other irons in the fire and only the rotation which is 12/2 puts me off Qatar. The alternative is in the field in Kaz 4/4. Swings and roundabouts, I'm more tempted now though, cos I heard youi say you love it, there may be a whole new world beneath the surface, possibly!

do you not like men Gypsy, you are very critical when guys generally state some facts. It is entirely true what I said, I was not making that statement personally- the women in Kazakhstan who have boyfriends out there nearly all get helped out by them, and it is they who say the money goes to help save for their mothers operation - its a favourite but very true.

Of course they are usually poor and the guys don't mind helping them however to buy clothes etc which is what the money really goes on, some of the guys have married out there, I was not being arrogant or otherwise it's just the way life is there, they are often treat much better than their own guys treat them, yet again what they say! Yet another culture. Lighten up!

I have a lot of respect for women because I know there are many good ones out there, and I have a long story that I won't go into having been walked all over in my western marriage, and financially one of the reasons I may have to come to qatar. But that's life.

You can walk the streets without any fear of getting mugged. There are bars/clubs (yeah, right) that you can pass the time with. Like I said, you'll eventually meet people here that will make it worthwhile.

But no matter what we tell you about Doha, it's still your perception of it will prevail. Cheep up...QL will keep you informed.

Cheers

I forgot to add, the roads are terible here in the UK also, try the M62, or the M25 ring road in rush hour. Lets face it in most small UK communities what is there to do, I go to work, come home, not much else, then do the same all over again the next day? On a week end go for a night out, shopping golf whatever etc.

Is it not easily possible to go to Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Bahrain on a weekend for a change? The place cannot be that bad surely.

I have been to Kazakhstan and yes there are women, but you cannot walk the streets, it aint safe, and there is nothing to do but drink - no golf courses, I mean nothing! There are lots of women, most of whom want helping out for a mothers leg operation! maybe a few genuine if your lucky. If the place is safe thats a bonus, the UK aint. In Kaz to go for a walk is a luxury.

Surely how bad can Doha be? Privet.

It is better than I thought it was going to be, but that isn't saying much. I had no idea there were so many men here. I have given up on meeting any women while I am here. Going to any bars or clubs is too much of a hassle and when you get there the place is crowded and the drinks are expensive. If you come, just get it in your mind that it really isn't going to be much fun. I disagree to a point that "Qatar is what you make it", the traffic and lack of things to do make Qatar what it is. Traffic flow and people with some sense on the roads sure would help. I am about tired of sitting in traffic for hours. Hurry up September, I am ready to go. LOL I am not trying to be negative and understand that Qatar is growing and changing. I respect the different people and different cultures. I do think being here has been a positive life experience. It just hasn't been much fun. This is just my opinion.

At first, you might get a shock (just a little bit) because it's a totally different place than what you're used to in UK. But, nevertheless, there are a lot of expats around that you'll happen to meet as you settle in.

Just watch the posts (sane and crazy ones...lol) here in Ql so you would know what's happening....

Well I suppose if thats the way women are treat out there no wonder they are reluctant to go out socialising, but that kills the place for any genuine bloke who is looking for a good lady to share the time with.

I won't be writing any books, they bore me - I don't enjoy boredom - if that is Qatar then I am having second thoughts, OK the money might be good but why waste a few years of actually living to earn a few quid more?

A ratio iof 28-1, how strange. Ok where do you look? I was told it is a boring place, is that really thr case?

My beloved Qatar is versatile, it has its own identity

good place for teenagers (this place is blessing for moms) but not really for corrupted souls.

If you are coming in summer you will be really bored

howeverl you will have plenty of time to finish those novels u always wanted to if ur bookish.

One of the best Golf club is here, even fine dining

I am certain this place will bring you closer to your loved ones.

To enjoy Qatar you must get into Qatari culture....do not dwell into colonies like we do, we have Inidan colony, filipina colony, european colonies What for?

Well thanks for that you lot, the place I come from in the UK is quite bring in actual fact, it's a small village where nothing happens so being in Doha can't be worse. Being in my thirties I have matured to the point where I don't act like a jerk, I like a few drinks yes but good company and a laugh is enough without going OTT. Good to know the potential is there to pair up, I find its makes life more interesting and easy to share some company.

The porta cabin shouldn't be a problem - they are normally air conditioned.

Going home every 12 weeks is actually pretty often I think so don't worry too much on that front.

The golf course is PGA rated so no worries there.
