Ladies, Beware of private transportation drivers in Doha

joann_xvi
By joann_xvi

Due to the unavailability of Karwa, I am always forced to take a "private transportation" and pay as much as QR 15 from Airport to Al Sadd, sometimes they even charge QR 20. I will pay any amount just to get home in time and avoid waiting hours and hours for a Karwa to come.

Some drivers, mostly Asians, are very friendly. But one time, I stumbled upon a Syrian driver, he drives a Nissan Altima and he called to me "taxi?" so instead of standing in the afternoon heat for another 15 minutes, I said yes and got in.

At first he was very friendly, he tells me where he works and that he only does "transportation" as part time and he said sorry because he speaks little english. So I just say "ok", "really" and things like that...

Then he keeps turning his head towards me and looking at me thru the rearview mirror. I started to become conscious about my blouse, maybe it's unbuttoned or something. So I covered myself with a magazine and my bag. Then he said "I love you" out of nowhere, "I like friendship with you". I told him "I'm married and I have a baby". He said "NO problem, I'm good guy". I was only about 2 stoplights away from home and while the car was on a stop, he turned to me and reached for my legs. I immediately hit his hand with the magazine and shouted "DO NOT TOUCH ME, I'M A MARRIED WOMAN, PARK THE CAR I WILL GET OUT!" then he said "sorry, sorry, no angry with me".

I then called my husband and told him to wait for me outside the house as I'm worried the driver will take me somewhere else, so I didn't provoke him all the more. He then locked all the doors so I became more worried.

I was thinking of removing my high heels and jump out of the car but that would be dangerous and I was very nervous because he was a undeniably a large man. I saw my husband waiting at the corner of the road so I told him to stop. Then my husband asked him "What is your problem, do you want me to call the police?" Then in a flash he was gone. We didn't get his plate number.

After one week, I saw him again parked outside my office, waiting for the next prey. His plate number is 344920 Nissan Altima. Beware of this guy or any other maniac drivers out there.

I just hope they will have more Karwa out on the streets!

Not harsh at all....Give respect - take respect.

If the driver wants to feel-up woman he should not be working in Public service least of all Transportation.

Imagine what he would have done to a vunerable housemaid, or a new tourist, or a student!

The plight of Karwa is because of the Sponsorship law. They cannot do much regarding their staff. (Though they could do better to recruit locally).

Those people who support the Sponsorship law are the ones who do illegal business by "selling" visas.

brandylady....you should have complained.....

Karwa wont deport these buggers due to the Sponsorship cost and effort. They just deduct money from their salary.

In fact Karwa would love to receive as many complaints as possible so as to make their workers, work free for them...lol

...don't ride with people you don't know. period.

there are legit transport companies (besides Karwa) whom you can call and they basically charge the same. try getting in touch with them instead. it would be better to pay a little extra so long as you get home safe.

and in the future, if you must ride in a Karwa, jot down their specific car numbers as soon as you get in, call someone (a family member perhaps) and give them that number (usually marked somewhere in the cab...as far as i remember). And while doing this, make sure the driver hears you. I mean, chances are, it might give these sick peeps second thoughts before doing some crazy stunts, if they know that they could be traced and all.

personal opinion.

Yes, we ladies are always helpless when horrible things like this happens and its real frightening to be a victim.

As for me if I really had no other choice but to take a taxi or private taxi here (as my last resort), then what I did was always before going into the car (note the car number) I will purposely talked to someone on my mobile by mentioning the car number and says I am on the way (talking loudly for the driver to hear me and indirectly warning him someone knows I am in his car).

So far so good, hope it works all the while. Maybe others can do the same as a precaution if you dont have any other choice but to take a taxi.

from just past landmark, my karwa taxi driver suddenly turned right onto a road I didn't recognise, when I asked him why he muttered 'shortcut', I calmly but firmly told him there is no shorter way than the way I had asked him to go and he was to turn around and go back.

He said are you new to here, I replied no, that I had been here a year and am not paying the extra he cost me by going off the wrong way.

Was nervous as the road he took was nothing more than a dirt track, however I did get home safely, he didn't get a tip and I told him the reason why.

He apologised and I said this time I would let it go but next time I am reporting him.

Hope you are over your shocking experience.

COuldn't agree more. Lack of sex or access to it is not an excuse to assault a woman. Men should learn control.

A couple of people on here have mentioned the fact that these guys are away from their wives blah, blah, as if that affers some kind of explanation for why they do what they do. I'm sorry but that is just sooooo wrong. At the end of the day a woman has the right to be safe and a man has the ability to control himself!!! Using the fact they are away from their women folk does not condone the harrassment of innocent women. We all have some modicum of self control and if they're that frustrated there is always the "manual" option. There is no excuse or condonation for sexual harrassment or worse assault. Just my 2 dirhams. . .

You are correct JBH...we hope some more views...

By JBH• 16 Apr 2007 21:12
JBH

Taking women out of the situation is not the only way to look at it.

Taking the bad drivers out of the situation is another way of looking at it.

I would never say women are asking for it if they get in a taxi, nor would I say men who go to bars and get beaten up are asking for it.

But unfortunately such situations exist.

In this particular topic the subject matter is women being assaulted, regularly by all accounts, in taxis.

And I thought "wouldn't it be an idea if there were a company that offered an all female service".

There have been such services in the UK.

I can understand and I do agree that there shouldn't be a need for it, but I am hearing that there is.

That is why civilised societies beverope laws, but some times more is needed as the law can't be everywhere at once.

People get hurt in car crashes, nobody said don't drive in cars, instead they added safety features.

I was merely suggesting a safety feature that could help with the problem.

As for your question "where do you draw the line".

I don't know, I don't think anyone does.

But until we can eradicate all dangerous or unpleasant situations they will always be there.

I repeat, Women are not the problem here, the situation is the problem.

Report all crime and hopefully the law can make at least some impact and hopefully make all peoples lives easier and safer.

Am I explaining myself properly or making it worse?

By Serendipity• 16 Apr 2007 16:28
Serendipity

JBH, I don't believe that would actually solve the problem.

Women removing themselves from that particular situation would just result in the problem manifesting elsewhere, and where do you draw the line?

If women get hassled on public transport, i.e. they can't catch a bus because of groping men, they resort to private hire taxis.

Women start to get hassled in some of the private hire taxis by some of the drivers, so you suggest they stop using taxis with male drivers.

I've personally been hassled walking through streets in other countries, do you think women should stop walking or being out in public more generally? Where do you draw the line? At what point do you say: It's not up to the women to stop catching buses, it's not up to the women to stop using taxis driven by male drivers, it's not up to the women to stop being provocative (i.e. simply being out in public)?

At what point does someone say that the problem is these men who can't control their urges and they are the ones who need to address their behaviour?

Who's to say that if these men are deprived of a chance to behave in this fashion in their taxis that the problem won't manifest elsewhere? I can tell you the answer right now, if they are deprived of one outlet they will manifest their behaviour elsewhere.

You're putting the onus on women, when women are the innocent parties in all this. You are basically saying that if a woman gets in a taxi with a male driver, then she's partly to blame, she's almost asking for it.

You think you're not saying women are to blame, but on a basic level if you're saying that the solution to the problem is to remove women from the situation, that if only the women were to remove themselves from the situation everything would be okay, then you are saying that it's the women who are the problem.

By JBH• 16 Apr 2007 15:32
JBH

Serendipity, you can read it at many levels, but I can assure it was not intended at the level you have picked up.

When ever I come across a problem I look for ways to avoid the problem next time, as I am sure we all do.

For this problem I consider there needs to be a way to remove the need for women to have to rely upon the [bad] male drivers.

My intended point was in the rest of the post.

There is/could be a need for an all women taxi service and I think it is needed.

Please be assured, I was not and would never suggest it was any womans fault.

And I certainly didn't intend to offend.

I am very aware of the problems my wife and daughter may come across and I am looking for solutions.

I don't know how we are going to get around it yet.

I hope I have explained myself a bit better, and again, sorry for any offense, none intended.

By Serendipity• 16 Apr 2007 15:06
Serendipity

"The first time it happens, it's their fault

The second time it happens, it's your fault"

Do you have any clue how offensive that is? I'm not yet in Qatar but I have experienced hassle in other countries. Usually, the only thing the woman is at fault of is being a woman.

You're the chap who's just about to relocate aren't you? Wait until your wife and teenage daughter have experienced getting hassle off guys even though they have done absolutely nothing to invite nor warrant it, and then come back and tell us females that if it happens more than once then it's 'our' fault.

Really, truly, for some of these depraved individuals, you just have to be female, you don't need to dress or act provocatively in any way shape or form, you just have to be female.

By anonymous• 16 Apr 2007 07:47

Be practical friends...here we have police to protect you..and the law also with the ladies..

If anything goes wrong.. report to the police directly (its common in any countries.. such crimes may happen).

When you are going outside please be aware about your dressings (its not our country and we must follow the culture).

By Tyler• 15 Apr 2007 20:47
Tyler

Just so all the ladies realize that these guys are just nuts try being a guy and getting propositioned by the driver? This has now happened twice since being in the country. It is a bit easier as a guy to get the vehicle pulled over and get out on the side of the ride, but just as offensive and potentially dangerous for the guys out there.

Hmmm- which personality is coming out today?

By anonymous• 15 Apr 2007 12:56
anonymous

What is that ?? it is really scary specially for ladies

for Altima one it is some how acceptebale to do things like that becoz he is not official but he must be bunshed for his treat to you .

For Karwa thats really scary and that driver must be kicked out of Qatar also the altima driver.

Qatar always were safe and we want it to be always safe so plz any Private Drivers or Karwa Drivers do anything wrong plz go to police directly so the police punish him and he never dare to do it again.

If you need help send me a private msg & i will try to help with all i can

By JBH• 15 Apr 2007 12:35

I live be the mantra;

The first time it happens, it's their fault

The second time it happens, it's your fault

What seems to be missing here is a cab service with women drivers.

I'm sure we would all pay a little extra for an up and coming business offering a much needed and innovative service.

Why don't some of the ladies pool together and look into how they can set this up?

With the obvious demand and relativly small area the right vehicles with glass partitions to protect the driver a fleet of about 5 cars would be kept running.

Are there any female entrepreneurs ready to step up and make a change?

The excessive number of men living alone is a big social problem not only in Qatar, but all over middle east. Their living conditions are very oppressive and most them are almost "on the edge", so to say. Irrational behaviour from them, therefore is not surprising, even though its not socially acceptable. The conditions are to blame, definitely.

By JBH• 14 Apr 2007 15:13

Although preying on unwilling people is unforgiveable, it is bound to happen if there are so few women about.

How do these guys get relief if they are away from home for years at a time?

The people who permit workers into the country should at least be monitoring the M / F ratio knowing so many men are going to be living in the country for so long.

Are there erm... "professional establishments" in Qatar?

I don't know if I am saying this correctly but allowing so many men in the country for long stays is creating a problem.

Angelo

Haven't seen you in a while, welcome back.

My comment was, my thoughts, friends of mine and company employees who use public or private transport have never had any problems (thus far).

Also the ones who use private transport get details from fellow employees or friends, so everyone knows each other. Moreover, private tranport or unlicenced taxi's (who do not wear the Karwa colors) are breaking the law. Since the number or Karwa vehicles are less or not available in some areas or even do not want to work in some area, the-private-transport take advantage of it, I do not think it bad, only, some individuals behaviour gives all of them a bad name. These guys need to be castrated (sorry, couldn't help myself here).

Crime is all over the world, lowest reported in the ME Middle East).

Have a great weekend.

I don't think it's an anomaly unique to Qatar. When I was working in London our female employees were warned repeatedly to only use Black Cabs and not the cheaper unlicensed ones, specifically for this reason; assault.

By Angelo• 13 Apr 2007 07:26
Angelo

This happens here due to the high ratio of men to women. Probably in the ratio of 10:1. Men (assuming in the low category, ie labourers, drivers, helpers etc.) employeed here are away from wives and means of having s*x for great lengths of time, ie 2 to 3 years.

SilverFern, your request would best be answered by a friend who personally knows someone who is providing private transport service or else at some point in time you could experience mildly the above experience.

Don't get over excited… the logic behind his actions is rather simple really.... follow the steps:

1- Man see region/world being run with the law of jungle…

2- Man see society being run with the mentality of "every man fins for himself"…

3- Man see woman…

4- Man see self a little horny...

5- Man see in rearview mirror no one watching…

6- Man see helping himself to a serving of you…

See? I told you it's purely logical… just think about it.. he only did as he saw fit.

First of all I don't know what to say to all the women who got that bad and scary experience with those crazy drivers, let god be with all of you.

1- Before you get in the car [if you have to] in front of the driver, write down his plate number and let him know from the beginning that if something went wrong 'I'm ready'.

2- If a friend of you was waiting for you until you got a taxi and then leave, you can also leave the plate number with him/her in case.

3- If you start feeling that something wrong is going on, don't hesitate to call a friend and tell him/her that you are in this car and this is the plate number.

4- If it goes for more than the things that you can bare with like looking at you or trying to talk to you and the guy was crazy to attack you or trying to touch you, then fight with the most that you got, don't stay quiet or shocked don't know what to do.

5- These people does not come with the good words and nice speak, tell him that I will report you if you did not stop the car right now.

6- If you felt like [Gypsy] that you will stay there with him because you will not find another one then let it be, go out of the car and call a friend or anyone that you know and tell them that you are in trouble. This is an emergency and there is nothing to worry about it, it is not the time for 'Etiquette Rules', your life might be in danger.

7- Some of these guys are drivers who lost their jobs and want to work to eat, the others are trying to hunt women thinking that being a driver giving him the privilege to do such nasty stuff that I'm ashamed of talking about them.

God Bless You All, ... Take Care

One of them wanted to take me to his place and said no need to pay to live in hotel you can live with me for free! I swear I opened the door while the car was moving! There were many details I don’t want to talk about…

another driver was talking in a religious crazy scary tone and told me he cannot be good Christian becaues of ME!! and I was like man what did I do! .. he said because Jesus, as the psycho said, will consider him a sinner only for looking at my eyes because he cant control the things happens with him once he sees dark eyes! Yuck yuck yuck..

another one started talking about his wife who just left him and almost cried lool so I was like I wanna comfort him but I’m scared he might take reveng by murdering me for being woman like her loooooooool

anyway... Thank God you're safe...again, YOU HAVE TO REPORT!!

Also Ainarl, the ones doing the attacking are usually south-east Asian too. The guy who attacked me was Phillipino.

"dont ride with other nationals. just hitch with our own if possible or better yet you can arrange with a regular transport with our kabkababayan." So your nationals are angels and the others bastards, are they? Superior morals or something?

I called my Qatari friend (all of us should have at least one Qatari friend) who works for the MOI. I gave him the plate number and asked me why I didn't report it earlier, he said he will file the report and send the maniac to his home country in a few days.

I advise you ladies to do the same. Get the plate number and file a report!

sick and i am so tired of them! Where do they get off harassing women like this? Really they make me sick! Living out here has changed my perception on so many things, men mainly! ( Of course not my hubby!!) I sometimes just cant take all the creeps out here and want to really hurt them all! Makes me so mad! Lets just hope these guys get caught and off the street, and pray they dont have housemaids.

i do have several encounters w/ pervert drivers... i was pregnant w/ my second child when there was this orange cab driver brought me to salwa road..to think that i should be going on the other direction w/c is towards the corniche side... i told him that i will call a police of he wont bring me to the right direction...

second.. a karwa driver... indian man from kerla... i was with my eldest son and we were about to go home ( i was still pregnant at that time) when he suddenly stopped the cab in a dark street and turned his back towards the back seat and started touching me so i grabbed my son and put him on my lap..but still the driver was so scary continuing the forceful attack on me... i shouted and begged to stop...

as i my son and i reached home..i began calling karwa hotline and reported the incident then they traced the driver and did an immediate action... they told me to go to their office but i cant w/ my condition, 6 months pregnant and really helpless and traumatized w/ what happened.. the karaw manager talked to me and they assured me that they will do the necessary action to that stupid maniac driver...

as for you dont be scrared..police are there..cid are there.... just pray that the Lord may give you strenght to face each of your life...

I hope you reported that Karwa driver, it's scary to think he can also be driving children to school, as many of the Karwa drivers do.

I still have the direct contact numbers of the managers of Karwa. The Operations Manager for the Taxi Operations was my former boss and I could give you his direct office number or his mobile. Or if you want, the Director of Taxi & Limo Operations, perhaps???

I don't understand why you ladies let this kind of stuff go. Women have a lot of sanctity in official eyes. The police are just waiting to pounce on men who harass women.

Someone attempted to harass my wife once; a license plate number was all it took to end the matter.

Don't waste time. Report the matter. One day one of these guys will really get out of hand and, then, wouldn't it have been better to have stopped him earlier on?

For the Altima guy.. trust me dont leave him if you need more witness. I'll say that I was in the next car driving along and i saw it too.. Please don't let him go easily.. let the other ppl specially his pervert friends know abt it too.

So for the Karwa thats even easier.. please do note down the no.s these drivers here get paid 800 a month leave there families at home... and come here to do all this.. where is there Conscious?

Trust me I cant imagine of gettin back seat with my girl in the car, imagine some women you dont even know. how sick!!!

Thanx for this post I better warn my girl she's a crew as well.

I get really annoyed and aggressive when it comes to mis behaving.

Don't you think we should report these maniacs to the police? Especially Karwa drivers have a taxi number, we can report them easily and deport them.

Yes careful with Karwa taxi drivers as well, I got advances by one of them too!

Beware Karwa too. I took one home one night from the Pearl, and the guy pulled over and tried to get in the back seat with me. I started kicking and screaming and eventually he stopped and finished driving me home. He wouldn't let me get out of the car and I wasn't sure what I should be more afraid of, being stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere or him taking me and killing me somewhere.

Report this sick PERVERT to the police, take his care number plate to them and get him locked away.

There are far to many of these men on the streets and he WILL prey on another woman, so please get to the police (CID) and get him locked away.
