You can't self medicate if it's an allergic reaction Owen. That requires specific treatment, so do certain kinds of infections.

Go to emergency it is simple - if you can't well no issue just suffer but if possible in silence please - you have managed a whole thread just for your sting. Either do or don't finish the subject so many remedies have been offerd to you and so many options what more do you want??

their tentacles can reach VERY far out and sting long after they are dead..there are times when they are washing in so much that the beach is littered with them..the tires on your car so pop, pop, pop as you drive over them...nasty little critters...and mannnnnnnn do they hurt when you get hit by one!

The species of jellyfish and related stinging beasties (sea lice, ctenophores etc.) that bloom here in Qatar are generally not the dangerous species (e.g., Box, Portuguese man-of-war), this is not to say that a sting may not be received from the blooming species. However, when swimming or diving full body protection (e.g. lycra suit) should prevent dermatological contact and thus stings. Stings from blooming species would normally only need Hydrocortisone cream to remove itching sensation - a small rash may develop and persis for months. As always if unsure / condition worsens medical assistance should be sought.

DEAD jellyfish will still sting, therefore minimal contact advised.

Typical initial treatment of jellyfish sting involves preventing further toxin release by removing any remaining tentacles or other retained animal parts. These may not be visible! There is no consensus for the best method of inactivating stings and reducing pain. There is some evidence that immersion of the affected area in hot water and the application of heat packs are effective pain-relief methods. Other treatments recommended by published and anecdotal sources include application of cold packs and irrigation with ethanol, vinegar, urine, baking soda, or methylated spirits. There is insufficient evidence to support one treatment over others because of the variety of study designs and jellyfish species that were used. Vigorous rubbing and irrigation with fresh water are not recommended because these methods may induce additional nematocyst discharge. Furthermore irrigation with seawater from intake not advised as this may introduce more stings onto skin.

The biggest problem is differentiating between jellyfish and other marine organisms that can sting and look like jellyfish......

Jellyfish stings should never result in an open wound. If you have one go to A&E and get it attended to.

Sea snakes that are often seen in the sea are not to be touched/harassed as they are potentially deadly. Again DEAD sea snakes still have bite reactions for several hours after they are dead.

Owen I've been stung by more jellyfish then I can count and the pain and sting has NEVER EVER lasted more then a few hours. If its gone 2 weeks it's either:

A) infected

or

B) you're taking an allergic reaction.

Go to the doctor. More then likely they will prescribe you some antibiotics and a cream.

Newly weds were travelling by a train, on the way to their honemoon destination. At night the wife said : Ohhh, my finger pains so much!!!!

Husband: Don't worry, here is the kiss and see it is gone!!!

Wife (after some time) : Ohhhh, my, I am having headache!!!!

Husband: No worries sweet heart, here is the kiss and see it is gone!!!!

Wife: Ohhh, my ....and the scene continues for some more time and for some more spare parts...

Some old fart from the upper berth, listneing this conversation quite patiently for some time finally got pissed off. Disgustingly he asked that new husband "well, do you have something for piles too?"

If the wound wasnt open at the time of the sting then there is no need to scrape as any stingers are only able to penetrate the into the epidermis layer of the area anf would of been released when this top layer came of as far as an injection goes depending if the area is infected the might give you an injection of strong antibiotics to start the process going then a course of oral tablets if there is no infection they will just more than likly give you a topical cream to apply and let nature do the rest as i said mine took just over 3 weeks to heal.

so, if i will go to the doctor, what do you think he will do? some say they will scrape some of the skin, some says will give me shot? just so i have an idea..(im really terrified now, reading all comments here..couldn't concentrate no more with work)..im having stomach upsets, thinking of goin to hospital..(maybe this afternoon)

when i was living in dubai used to go to jameriah beach and noticed the used to get quite a lot of sea snakes washed up on the beach while not the poisonous type they do have bacteria in there mouth which transfers to the wound when they bite if you leave the wound untreated it can become a rather serious infection.

By owen• 29 Oct 2007 11:23

mis-cat, when i got stuck, it just turned red and swollen...no wound..only now that the skin open to a wound..

by this i mean after you got stung was it bleeding, amount here is critical or did it fester into a blister then become an open wound. The reason for this is if it was already bleeding after the sting then but only small pin prick like dots then its defainatly some sort of marine stinger if it was more an open cut wound of sorts then it could be something else in the water that you brushed passed.

Using those things [Urine - Ammonia - Vinegar] should be after you got that bite directly. No point of using those now as well as what you have now is nothing but an open wound. Use any chemical that got Iodine in it to help your skin heal faster, if not then seeing a doctor is a must.

Tried kissing that before, does not work Rayyz :)

Go the the emergency and get it checked, it may have poison - unfortunately this is not a case of if I don't??

It is dangerous and jellyfish are not always just jellyfish there may be something there you don't know aobut. Also perhaps you need to have a check up if it is not healing , please go and see a doctor.

It is particularly dangerous if you still have those stings inside the wound....Go to Dr, he may give you some local anasthetics and then only work on your wound. Don't be afraid so much....

to take care of yourself..but i am serious about the infection and blood poisoning...I got mine from, of all things, a papercut..and ended up in the hospital

Hon, I have some powdered Polysporin that might help if you want it...would do directly into the wound and stay there...but still say you need to go find out if its alright...he's NOT going to give you a shot...

I'm with Mis-cat...water or saline is best to flush the wound...then keep it dry

if its an open wound get to the doctor if its not healing as you could end up with a secondry infection. ammonia, vinegar only work if the sting is fresh and only work with certain types of aquatic stings in some cases ammonia and vinegar can actually increase the absorbtion of the toxins into the body such is the case with blue bottles. so to use these methods now will only cause more harm than help. water or saline salution is the best thing now to flush out the wound and keep it dry if the area around the wound looks re and swollen its a sign there could be an infection already there so to be on the safe side get it checked out. if it helps i was stung by a jelly fish when young (hazard of living in the most dangerous place on earth) and it took almost 3 weeks clear up and still have the scare.

honey you don't want to get it infected or blood poisoning (trust me that's no fun..been there done that). He'll probably put you on antibiotics and a cream for the wound.

Selani..didn't mean to say not to use your method..I'm sure it works great on lots of things..just with jellyfish the toxins are NOT a good thing to have in her system. Besides...vinegar is acetic acid and will burn the ever living out of her open wound..

Vinegar is however, great for sunburns, with no open blisters...next time you get burned..within the first hour, wipe down the area with white vinegar and let dry...will keep you from peeling and cool down the skin...but you will still need to moisturize the area.

Peeing on stings makes the pain go away...don't ask me about the chemical process involved but I can confirm it DOES work...the major problemis overcoming the psychological hurdle lol.

And oh yeah, you have to do when the sting occurs....not 10 days later....thought i'd mention it so no one thinks i'm encouraging you to try it now.

Good luck thought....stings are nasty....hope you get better soon.

then stop using it and GET to the Doc's!!! Seriously...jellyfish are nothing to be messed with especially if you didn't use the ammonia when you first got stung. Don't use the ammonia or vinegar now..cause you'd want to climb the walls from pain since its an open wound..those are only when you first get stung.

Altho...urine is considered to be one of the cleanest bodily fluids there are. I mean just think about it..its filtered so many times...ok so I'm trying to justify peeing on a sting to myself now..lol

Wash it with vinegar daily until it heals completely. It will take three o four days to neutralize any remaining toxins. After that, you can also try onion peel. Take a sizable portion of onion peel, warm it up a little bit( until it is soft, then put it over the wound. tighten up with some bandage.

ammonia works best..we always keep some in our dive kits when we go scuba diving..neutralizes the poison...but if you don't have any ammonia...ok get ready...you can use urine...its mostly ammonia and will do the same thing..I know..yuck..but when you get stung..you really don't care..just make it stop hurting!
