How to stop my cat from chewing plants!

By Alumnar

Hi everybody,

I have finally decided to get some lovely plants for the house - nothing special, but still nice to look at. I have a cat who insists in chewing each and single one of them!
Is there anything I can do to stop him from destroying them all? I love my cat but would just love to be able to have some indoor plants too and not find them chewed to bits in the morning!

Thanks for your input :)

Cats need grass to eat. This is cos they lick their fur and that creates a fur-ball obstruction it their stomach. Grass will go around the fur and easier to regurgitate. So I recommend you get a grass plant from one of the nurseries and place this in front position. Other plants are very likely poisons for them and make them very sick. You are lucky that your cat eats the plants. I have given up on plants indoors as they think they are a great toilet!

Maybe it's time to get a dog and place him besides the plant to guard it from your cat. But try to feed the dog on time or just enough for him not to feel hunger or starve or else he will eat your plant and eventually your cat.

deficiency on something maybe the reason why they chew on plants to replenish. you have to supply this nutrients to them. give them vitamins or something. spray your plant with cat/dog deterent spray.

consider your cat as ruminant, sometimes cat need some fiber to their body,it is normal to them to chew some greeny grass, specialy if their digestion of food is very poor.all you have to do is,find some fresh herbs and its available at city center.and if you have time to visit one of the veterinary pharmacy, just ask them some thiamine or vitamin B1 infusion,it is a liquified bottle (1 pint).put some drops(10-12ml)together with the water.eating behaviour of orphan cat, varies to the owner.remember that buddy...

temporarily just use plastic plants inside the house...then observe if still your cat chew it...if you find the results effective then replace the plastic plants into a true plants....

Sorry but you can keep that comment out of my topic. You hate cats, go and sort yourself out. If you knew my 3 cats you would just LOVE cats. In our house we are all pet people, daughter wanted baby camel (!!!) when we arrived first, then she wanted the donkey from QAWS (to ride it and sleep with it in her room...LOL!)... (this list goes on and on!)

Thanks for the advice everybody :). Will grow some grass and in the meantime gonna check out the Plant Nurseries to see what I can get for my cat to chew on!

behavior ... your cat might be in pain or trouble and you don't know. Eating plants or grass will help them somehow ease the pain. I would suggest you take your cat for a checkup and if it's doing fine, then you gotta find a way to cover your plants or put them in an unreachable place [does not look like a trouble for a cat].

But seriously, cats only chew a little of grass/leaves when it's sick and coughs it afterwards when it's done 'cleansing' its sickness.

And not too often like eating a daily meal.

thanks! I had forgotten I brought a bag of grass seeds over to plant in a big pot. I just hope they grow overnight!

- This cat loves water... specially sprayed!

- He loves to play with aluminium foil...

- I dropped a pyrex dish when my daughter screamed tonight (he was eating the plant, that is why she screamed at him) and he just looked around at us and continued eating...

I think now you understand I must have a cat which is not really a cat...???

One of five options

1-feed him

2-kill him

3-let him go and have rest away off you(joke)

4-Remove any plants in the house

5-Put them in a place he can't reach.

It sounds to me like your cat might be looking for grass. This is natural medicine for cats and dogs and they will look for it to chew on, especially if they need to rid themselves of furballs for example. Some plants are toxic to cats too so best to offer him some grass as an alternative. You could even try to grow some in a small pot if there is nothing where you live.

And if you would see my cat, you would realise the last thing this cat needs is feeding! ;)

I really don't want to use chilli as I have 2 persians as well as this cheeky one and I would hate for anything to get into their eyes. Cats are just not the same as dogs when it comes to tricks. Thanks for the opinion though :)

Smear the leaves of some random plants with chilly juice and let your cat eat/lick it. It will not repeat it second time. It gets conditioned. I have done this with my dog and it has always worked.
