Compound or Stand Alone

Could anyone tell me which is better: compound or stand alone villa? We originally thought we would live in a stand alone but it seems that most expats live in compounds. Is it for security? Or just a matter of preference? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks. Michelle

I personnally prefere compounds for alot of reasons:

-security is an obvious one

-club house ,pool ,gym ,playgrounds etc is nother one

-but for me the most important advatage is maintenance

-also having a small community u can relate to ,where u can have a social life and where you're kids can romp free!

-being able to wear what u like!!lol

GIASI,

Are you familiar with the 'chav' culture that has invaded England or did you get out in time? Have a look at www.chavscum.co.uk and www.chavtowns.co.uk, and that will cure any homesickness instantly!

There are women out there who god created that are not made for bikinis. One of my neighbours was like that, and her husband (who i liked to call orca) also liked speedo trunks. I swear, everytime the used to walk past my window to go to the pool it was like watching richard attenboroughs "life below the waves". When they used to jump in the pool all the water used to jump out.

LMAO Giasi ...

My friend used to live in Al Fardan ... (now she moved to Al Naseem). It seems very normal for ladies walking around outside the house in the compound with bikin :-)

Personnally, i was looking for a compound that reflected my memories of england. You know... a council estate. there would be a burnt out ford escort with no wheels parked up somewhere. a pack of dogs would roam freely fouling the pavement. at 11 pm a gang of drunken men would sing noisily as they walked home. and what about car alarms... why cant people fit them so they go off every 15 minutes after midnight. old women in curlers and nightgowns would stand on their doorsteps with cigarettes hangin out the sides of their mouths..... aaaah.... im homesick already.

LOL... Sadly, I very much doubt it...

That said, you can get lucky... We are in a small compound (half a dozen or so villas) and NO kids under about 15... (*phew*....)

As long as you don't mind a pile of screaming kids running past your windows... (can you tell I don't have kids??) :)

Yeah compound pools bigger and there are also often tennis courts and gyms. Security not a big deal

a bit of both, I guess. Also if you live in a compound you might have the added benefit of the compound swimming pool and in some cases, even your own little supermarket within the grounds.
