Classical Music in Qatar

dimtorch
By dimtorch

Hi people!

we are likely to be moving to Doha to join the newly founded qatar National Symphony Orchestra. This is all done under the hospice of the Qatar Foundation. They are planning to put us up in the new University Campus off-site accomodation development. not too sure where that is though.

perhaps a random question: do any of you know if there is a piano shop in Doha? are you familiar with any classical music events? is there a music academy? do you know anyone who is learning/wants to learn a musical instrument?

i thank you in advance!

Dimitri (or anyone else),

Do you know someone who can teach classical guitar for my boy (12 yrs old). He already has the basic knowledge of playing classical guitar. We are desperate to find good classical guitar teacher for him in Doha (we have tried 4 different teachers, but still not happy with them).

When my boy started to play guitar back in our home country, he made a very good progress in one year, but almost no progress after 2 years here. All of his teachers maybe good guitar players, but they are not a good classical guitar teacher.

Regards,

Pang

Have fun torturing them, you well know what a squeaky violin in the hands of a beginner rehearsing to get the fingerings right, can do. It wasn't in their contract...lol

Nope. Piano/organ/keyboards. But bought an old violin from a thrift shop back home some time back, have yet to find the time to learn it. Now is a good time, my neighbours need serenading.... :P

But what I miss is the pipe organ - the real one, not the option on the electronic organ. Beautiful sounds.

Doha has many musical people.    There is a small community orchestra already (not professionals).   The demand for musical teachers is extremely high, far outweighing the available teachers.

Big problem is there are no music books here.   We stock up in the summer, and have it sent over by others.   Bring lots with you!

Qatar foundation housing is very very nice.  Just opened a couple of months ago.

I saw some advert here in qatarlivings.com somebody wants to be nanny.

When you are in doha you will see those ad in supermarket can also find some nanny advert.

Musical (western) activities like teaching, performance, shops, used instruments are very rare here. Only happen in Hotel's lounge. I play piano here for leisure and its almost impossible to get music book.

I see two music schools here, International Music School near Lulu hypermarket and another smaller one in Montazah area. Cannot imagine the difficulty parents in doha, to find a musical, sport education for their kids. Its good musicians like you are moving into Doha ^_^

Thank you for reply!! we are going to doha end of august and want to know what to expect.. we are in london and vienna based musicians ( my husband- violinist, i - pianist ). my husband got offered a position in newly formed Qatar National Symphony Orchestra and perhaps also teaching at the new Music Academy. we give recitals as duo and playing with orchestras as soloists and so on.. I don't have any job there yet and it is very difficult to imagine for me not to being actively involved in musical life!! but the qatar foundation will be available for phonecalls from middle of march so i have to wait.. there are so many things about i would like to know.. For example we have a little baby daughter! (6months old ) how can i find a nanny? i think you know about everything!!

i hope we could chat at some point and thank you again for reply!!

modern home is official dealer for yamaha and sell different range price of accoustic piano. From 4000 QR electric clavinova to 90.000 QR grand piano.

Qatar Foundation now and again bring international pianist or other classical musician to Doha. The last one i remember was Mariana Izman (or something like that) that come to Doha for the past 2 or 3 years.

Embassy like French or Germany now and again also bringing classical musician to perform in Doha.

The only music school that i know teaching classical music under the royal school of music is International Music School. Apart of that i know there is a Bulgarian lady call Yana that doing Royal exam too for piano and giving classical piano tuition.

I am sending my son to a piano lesson ... so far i am doing it to him just to test the water weather he have any interest in piano. If one day he pick up on that i would like him to do it mor seriously.

Why did you ask? Are you plannin to open a music school?
