Can you avoid paying your child maintenance to a child in the UK when you are a UK citizen with Permanent Residency of Qatar and employed with UAE employer? any help would be great. Thanks.

I reckon it's worth contacting a lawyer. The person you spoke to at CSA may not know what can be done, or may have just given the easy answer.

So much for the powers of the CSA - it is apparently that easy to get out of paying child support!!!! Lets face it, takes a certain type of person to blatantly do it. Atleast now I Know... thanks again... (It does look great to work here though!)

Xanadu that sucks !!! just cause he is out of the country does not mean the child ceases to be his or ceases to need feeding/clothing and so on...how do they justify these kind of things....

Thanks for all advice - confirmed from CSA today there is nothing I can do to ensure he pays child support, even upon his return to the UK because he has told them he is resident in Qatar and employed with Saudi employer for 10 years. He has been let off the hook big style!!!!

Well it might be illegal, I highly doubt there's anyway to make him pay while he's here. I'd contact a lawyer with international experience and his embassy here in Qatar and see what can be done.

taken out against him for non-payment of maintenance and whenever he does go back to the UK he will have to reckon with it.

Have you sought legal advice from lawyers in the UK? Or contacted the child support agency? They will be able to help far more than any of us.

Hi there

I am a SHE, my ex thinks that because there can be no legal enforcement for child maintenance between Qatar and UK he should not have to support his daughter.

Thank you so much for your responses and agree with all of your comments. Can you believe? legally, I can do nothing!! Thanks again...

Xanadu, I don't know how you got into such a situation and if it's you or your ex who has to pay but one thing is for sure: both parents had their share in it so both are responsible for the child. There is no way you could run away from this responsibility.

but on return to the UK you will be in trouble and possible looking at jail time for your evasion of your responsibilities. Glad I am not your kid!! michael jackson would make a more caring parent....

Good thinking Mandi ... I suppose any woman who lost custody of her children can't be much of a mother and would not be so concerned to stoop this low.

I know women who are paying child support.

The only way to get off by not paying is to go on the dole and show the CSA that you dont have enough money to support your child..

Yep DaRuDe.. the question is quite confusing, but I guess what he is trying to ask here is that if he is out of the UK does he need to pay Child Maintenance.

Hmmm, has (ex)hubby done a runner?

At some point he will have to return and will no doubt be hit with a choice of paying arrears or face prison

Tallg is right, technically you have pay for Child support no matter where you are in the world. However if you are absconding and not informing the Child Support Agency of your whereabout then that is illegal in the UK and you will have to pay back dated payments.

I very much doubt it. For whatever reason, it was determined that you should pay child maintenance. I don't think leaving the country gets you off the hook, otherwise everyone would do that.
