Beware of car theft.

Hi,

I'm writing the following just warn all QL readers to be careful with their belongings, especially NOT TO LEAVE ANYTHING of value inside the car. My laptop and my wife's bag were stolen on 09.12.2010, from my car, at The Center Mall (Megamart), at 14:30 in the afternoon. The car was parked inside the mall's parking lot. So I never believed that I will be robbed in Qatar, however it happened.
Don't let this happen to you too.
In the unfortunate case that it does happen to you, and if the car was not broken in, go to Capital Police, located on B Ring road, as you are coming from Toyota Signal, towards Corniche, one signal before the Sword street
(Grand Hamad), turn right. It is a arabic style building.
Do not touch anything in the car or outside, they will take fingerprints from it.

Be safe,

Geo

Car thefts have always been around ever since cars first started being produced. You don't even have to actually steal the car to get charged with grand theft auto, you need to attempt to steal one. Grand theft auto covers any motor vehicle such as automobile, truck, bus, coach bus, motorcycle, snowmobile or trailer.Car MOT|Car Servicing

These things happen when we relax.

Still, Doha is by far, one of the safest places in the world.

I was telling my wife the other day that we should be a little bit careful about all the stuff that we leave inside our vehicles, especially since we came from a very dangerous country.

You've gotta love this place! :)

>>>iemaeema said Come on, guys... ...

2022 is coming, don't talk about these negative stuff in Qatar, in my opinion, this is paradise, everything is perfect, and the city is full of nice people.>>>

Wow, what drugs are you taking, iemaeema? You think Qatar is a Paradise? Everything is perfect? Nice people? Yowza. Does the Emir pay you to post such comments on QL? You should ask some of the laborers who aren't allowed in the malls on their one day off, being paid close to nothing, if this place is "paradise". Have you ever been anywhere else? Just curious. You should consider checking yourself into a psych ward, however.

By jdylan• 15 Dec 2010 08:15

Why do you think that wouldn't happen in Qatar? Some of the biggest thieves I know live in Qatar. They bring in workers from other countries on a minimum wage contract, then when they arrive, they take their passport and make them sign a "new" contract for much less than what was agreed on. If they don't sign it, they are sent back home, already in debt because they had to borrow money to go to Qatar. And the bosses know this.

I see many companies not pay their workers for months and months until the workers simply quit and go home, unable to find any help from the government. (They might burn the buildings, as has happened before!)

I've heard story after story about the maids being turned into slaves, not being paid as agreed, being raped, even killed...

And on the workers side, the people pay them a barely liveable wage in a very expensive country, then expect them NOT to steal to survive? What do YOU think would happen? A guy gets paid $200 a month, and he sees $1500 laptop sitting in a car...

So don't say something stupid like you are shocked, SHOCKED! that something like that could happen in Qatar. Everything happens in Qatar, you're just looking in the wrong places.

Here are the lessons I've learned based on this post and the comments:

1. Don't leave your valuables.

2. Don't forget to lock the car.

3. Do not rely on the police.

4. There's only one person in Qatar who thinks Qatar is very safe. Yes, there is a certain someone.

5. There can be very rude neighbors who would scatter garbage, flatten your tires, break your side mirror, and even smash your car just because of a tiny millimeter of your tire touching their 'territory' on the parking lot. Sadly, this is reality. My housemates have been victims of such bullying. Thank God those Arab neighbors left.

after reading this post i remember the time about 1 and a half year a go when in madinat khalifa south area, not valuables not even the rims or spare tires, but my whole car was not there when i got back home late night, as i went out with my friend in his car....

after 7 months police called me to check one car which was parked in open area somewhere near to wukair, and it was mine with just body left over there :(

You clearly know nothing about me... actually I live in company apartments in al mansoura - not a five star area - where my car is parked down stairs and got hit by a neighbor because he didn't like me to park near his house....

best you stop assuming things about QLer's you don't know - I have been here 5 years and am far more aware of what goes on in this country....

Thank you for your kind words. I'm sorry for being kind of aggressive for previous post.

In the first month I came to Doha, I saw some PEOPLE here in a 5-star hotel, and they were drinking beer. Then, I told myself that, anything that happens elsewhere can happen here. Nothing is impossible.

That's the logic, on which I gave my comments above. Does it make sense?!

Thank you

Lemaeema,

As Xena says once it was crime free country. Here this QL forum helps lot of people by sharing experience's.And we had been here from ASIAD games period itself. This thread gives an information to all QLr's to create awareness to don't keep valuable things inside the car while parking. Here no body discuss about stupidity. We hope that you may understand ,now ,why this bitter experience was posted here by our beloved victim.

Xie xie for understanding.

Terrible what happened here. But I disagree when you say that the police do not do anything about it. I know for a fact that they take these things seriously and a lot of theft items are actually recovered but their owners never show up, in fast it's statements like these that make people not report a crime however small it is.

I saw a room full of recovered items at the police: Mobile phones, Jewelery. Obvisouly nothing with a victim's identity.

I also disagree with the notion that people steal because they are poor or have no jobs. I'm sure some will do if they are desperate but a thief is a thief because they are sick and actually, that's my personal opinion they should be treated for kleptomania.

Yes, posting here on QL will be effective! How else will the residents of Qatar find out about these crimes? Unfortunately the media in Qatar does not publish anything that puts Qatar in a negative light as if these crimes are not happening around us. Brushing this under the carpet just like all the other crimes once again!

been here 5-years - and yes, it basically was a crime free city....

What are you rambling on about?

1) Do you think this will be a part of effective feedback controls?

2) Who told you people Doha is a crime free zone?

3) Don't you know......??? You figure out what more I can say here

I've been here working for one year, and I have 10-month driving experience in Doha city. You think I'm stupid??? This is not the first post reporting such kind of crime in Doha, for me, this might be the third time I saw this kind of post, and there will be more, I'm sure. But the questions are:

1) Do you think this will be a part of effective feedback controls?

2) Who told you people Doha is a crime free zone?

3) Don't you know......??? You figure out what more I can say here

2022 is going to make everything worse...

There are going to be many more staff/labourers coming, which is going to lead to unhappiness due to bad salaries or bad treatment, which leads to people absconding from their work - which leads to poverty - which leads to desperation and that intern leads to thief....

Wake up and smell the coffee - as nice as the 2022 bid is going to be for Qatar - its going to be its downfall too....

By snessy• 12 Dec 2010 09:45
snessy

iemaeema: I'm not sure if your post is sarcastic or not, but burying your head in the sand (no pun intended) isn't going to make these crimes go away...you have to accept these things happen and need to find ways to prevent it.
