basic legal advice please

Good morning,
I rented a car from a car company here and paid them for 1 week up front. At the end of the week I requested for the rental to be increased by a month, however the car broke down 4 days into the second week and i contacted them and they said they would send someone to replace the car for me. The car had major steering issues, overheating and AC. Three days past and still no sign of them, over the next 7-10 days i contacted them 3 times to come and fix the issue and sent them my location including my work location and even offered to come down and take the new vehicle but everytime i was promised that they would replace it.
Yesterday i said enough is enough so i said i would retrun then car nd they can keep their business but now they want money for all the days i kept this death trap of a car. I have texts showing i tried to get the car replaced.
If i refuse to pay where do i stand legally? I am willing to pay for those 4 days i used it
Any help would be appreciated, if they contact the police will I get arrested?
Usually, it is the responsibility of the car- rental company to get the car back to their workshop in case of a breakdown. However, you need to read the rental agreement. You may write to them and tell them you will pay only for the days you used the car and you may use the support of Consumer Protection should they threaten you of any legal action. I believe they will not take such a step as such actions cost money and takes much time. Also, you have kept yourself protected through written messages to them.
Sit with agency owner & resolve it amicably .................................
But the car was unsafe to drive, the steering issues were frightening?

The fact that they said they would send someone to replace it for you and they didn't, makes them guilty.
Your mistake.
U should have taken a breakdown and taken the car there. It is your responsibility to return the car to where you took.
However the whole matter is subject to negotiation and you will probably end midway between you and them
Report the case to the police and also go to Consumer Protection and file a case..
