Alcohol involved accident

Hi, I was involved in a car accident on Tuesday night. Here are the details. I had 3 beers at W hotel, was driving home and a truck ran a red light and t-boned me. I had witnesses stop and call the police, they told the police that the accident was not my fault, as did the truck driver. The police smelled alcohol on my breath and took me to get a blood test, then took me to the jail. I was in the jail until 9am an we proceeded to the court house. At the court house I told the Qataris the details and told them I had 3 beers. They made me pay 2000 riyal and told me I would have to go to court and they will give me a court date.

Has anyone ever been in this situation? What can I expect? I am finding lots of conflicting information. I am very very worried.

As in the US and most countries this is a very serious offence. As Mandi said be prepared to leave the country and learn from your mistake

You will most probably be given seven days to leave the country at your court date. That's what happened to the last Westerner in your situation. One night in jail and then deportation with a week's notice. Better get your financial affairs in order, i.e., sell your car, transfer your accounts back to the US, break the news to your family. Your BAL will show some alcohol and that's enough. I'm sorry to be so blunt but you need to be realistic and prepared.

Drink Driving

Qatar has a zero tolerance attitude to driving under the influence of alcohol. Drink driving offenders are punished by custodial sentences ranging from one month to three years, a fine or both. Those caught drink driving may also be deported. People should be aware that it if a police file is opened against them for a drinking or driving related offence, then they are not allowed to leave the country until the case has been resolved. Most cases are straightforward, but more serious offences can take six months to go to court.

What did they say regarding the result of the blood test? If it was found positive then irrespective of any accident or anybody's fault, you would be charged against 'drink and drive' rule. I am afraid you may have to serve a minimum jail-term and rest of the days could be converted to a fine.

You should be worried. There is a 0 alcohol tolerance here no matter who may be at fault. Suggest you get legal counsel ASAP
