Adherence to liquor rules stressed

LIQUOR bought at the country’s only dispensing centre run by the Qatar Distribution Company (QDC) should be taken home directly, according to the laws governing the sale of alcoholic beverages in Qatar, a source stressed yesterday.
The law, however, does not mention whether a vehicle carrying the beverage could stop at a shop on its way home, the source said.
“It is recommended that the items are taken home as quickly as possible. It is also advised that these goods are not visible to outsiders while being transported.
“The idea here is not to let any one become a public nuisance,” the source said.
“As the authorities are strict in enforcing the relevant laws, some people, particularly newcomers who are not aware of the country’s rules or culture may find themselves at a hard spot.”
In a recent case, two expatriate employees were caught transferring alcohol from one vehicle to another and legal action was immediately taken against them, a source said. Violators of alcohol rules are often deported.
The new traffic law stipulates stringent punishment, including immediate deportation, for people who are caught driving drunk.
Gulf Times has learnt that the traffic police have intensified their efforts for nabbing “inebriated” drivers by conducting random breath-tests of motorists, particularly during late night hours.
A spokesman for the Traffic Department said the police were only doing their job and it was a very serious crime in Qatar to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
Access to alcohol in Qatar is strictly controlled through a permit system. “Your permit comes with a short but clear enough list of do’s and don’ts, but many people either fail to notice them or overlook them,” added the source.
Alcoholic drinks can be consumed only at homes or at licensed bars or restaurants. Public drinking is illegal in the country. Permit-holders are also not allowed to gift, sell or exchange the beverages.
