I am not against politicians. I have been a “neutral” Filipino citizen from the time I first voted.
I married a US soldier back in 1998 and lived for four years in the United States. Since 2003, after my husband’s retirement from the Army, we have been living in Manila.
My husband has always been following news reports involving American soldiers here in the Philippines. We are disappointed, or rather upset, over reports that a senator is of the view that “our country was turned into a whorehouse for US soldiers.” (Inquirer, 4/3/09)
I beg to disagree with the senator. Not because my husband is a former American soldier but because I am a Filipina. And I say this because I think I have as much right as the senator to express my opinion.
We all know that prostitution is rampant in our country and, with or without the presence of American soldiers, with or without the Balikatan exercises, it will be in the Philippines and continue to be in the Philippines. And who’s tolerating prostitution? Aren’t we the ones making our country a whorehouse? This is the sad reality that we have chosen to deny.
My husband also wants to tell the Filipino public that every American soldier on Philippine soil is bound and guided by rules and regulations. I am also 101-percent sure that the American soldiers in the Balikatan exercises will not do a Daniel Smith.
