I lived in Houston for quite a while and my family is from Atlanta. . .so here's what I would do:
Fly direct to Houston, then catch a flight on either Delta or Continental. Both have heaps of direct flights to Atlanta since Continental is based in Houston and Delta is based in Atlanta. You really can't go wrong.
If you need to rent a car in Atlanta, go through Enterprise. I've been renting with them for years. Their customer service is top notch and their prices generally can't be beat.
Flights always screwed up. Either u will be sitting at JFK for hours or they will ask u to take bus ride to philly(happened to me) and then travel for forward journey. Delays at Washinton Dulles very few and atleast the pilot shows up. In my case, US Airways, pilot did not show up at JFK. Take South West within US. Daily flights from Dulles.

The best route is not economic, DOH-JFK or AUD or IAH direct (business class), then a local flight to ATL.
