Split a line for phone & fax - possible?
By Expat Sueño •
We have one jack in our office that we use for our high-speed internet connection. Is it possible to "split" this line so that it also works for our fax machine, or do I need to have a separate phone jack installed?
I purchased one of the gadgets that allow you to plug two phones into the same jack, but it didn't work for the internet + fax machine. Any other ways of doing this before I call Qtel for another phone jack?

DSL- Digital subscriber line---
each telephone jack has two ports, the port for the phone is called RJ-11, The other one is PORT RJ-45(Internet), each port has a different pin configuration, Just connect to the phone line port. You could trace the line visually from the original phone line and use that current phone line to connect to your fax machine. If you hear dial tone in the handset then you are ok.
Give it a try.
magicdragon said it clear.
So in our office there is one jack - the one for ASDL. No separate phone line. There is a jack that looks like it SHOULD be a phone line, but there is a little cover over the area that should hold the phone jack.
Think I can just pop that little cover off? Anything I should know before I try?
thanks again!
When Q-Tel installs ADSL you need to have a land line before that. They will give you a socket with two outputs: one for the phone, one for the ADSL modem. You can connect the fax to the phone line and a fax out- or throughput to your telephone handset. However, it is Q-Tel who has to supply the two sockets.
so no voice signal over your internet jack, you need separate jack for your fax/phone
Can I plug them in at the same time, though? I'm trying to avoid the need to unplug and replug anytime I need to use the fax machine. I have a Brother Multi-function machine from the U.S., which should work fine here (it worked in Australia). . .it's just the stupid phone/internet issue that's driving me batty!

You don't have to do that. Just plug your fax machine directly to it. Unless your fax machine, does not have a phone built into it. If that is the case, then you will have too add another telephone jack. Like an extension.
What kind of brand is your Fax?
Read the owners manual first before installation. You could always download from the manufactures web site in a PDF format.
