I would like to inform that Spinneys at the Mall has opened today.

Was in Spinneys yesterday and can confirm that they have an application in to sell pork. I don't fancy their chances though!

Why do we want pork? Because it tastes nice and us atheists love a bacon sarnie!

By anonymous• 17 Aug 2010 10:39

Didn't work before and it won't work now. Spinneys was here years ago and it closed because once people realized it wasn't going to sell pork then there was no point in going. I for one am not going all the way out to the mall just for a grocery store.

Become? I AM! We did over 3 years in Kuwait and, like most other expats from Kuwait, we became adept at making alcohol. From beer to flavoured "flash" using a still.

t_coffe_or_me is correct about the syndicate when the British Embassy authorised and I think sponsored (not ran) it. It was run by Cable & Wireless in the eighties and then later by one of the British linked engineering companies. There was a strictly applied earnings limit to purchase which spurned a big black market business.

QP, who had the only official bar (The Open Arms) in Qatar, had their own syndicate in Doha originally based behind the Falcon Club but latterly in the RAA complex. The permits were approved by QP themselves. Haris (I think he now works for QDC unless he's retired) was the senior barman in the club and can mix any cocktail you care to name.

When C&W moved out they had "accrued" in excess of QR one million riyals which they donated to Doha College for the artificial soccer pitch.

As in Saudi, the local embassy employees will be able to make a killing by selling alcohol and the expats will become experts in brewing their own....

By t_coffee_or_me• 12 Aug 2010 20:55
t_coffee_or_me

Earlier when Syndicate was run by the British Embassy lots of people made money by selling in the black market. A bottle for Qr. 10 to 15 used to be sold for 200+ in the black market.

Where would the government employees who receive an "entertaining alcohol allowance" obtain their supplies if QDC closed?.........the palace?

I doubt very much it will close but they could reduce the amount allowed or increase the minimum earnings for being able to buy it.

Yes I totally agree with you. However, many of the local public opposes the sell of alcohol and have started expressing that publicly in many forums more than any time before.

In the other hand, many establishments were permmited to sell alcohol lately that includes restaurants at the pearl and recently opened hotels.

That's why some local writers have hinted about regulating the sell of alcohol in some articles lately.

As for pork, I understand that's a main ingredient in many dishes around the world. Allowing certain pork products can be essential with the influx of foreigners in the country. Even if the authorities approves the sell of pork , The question is whether the local partner will accept selling it at the local stores.

I can live without that alcohol as it is also forbiden in our religion. But pork is not!

But I agree with everyone, if they want to ban alcohol, there should be no exception. Ban it totally!

Pork was available in the country till 1979 in Ali bin Ali supermarket and Qatar cold store.

As soon as Pork was stopped these 2 Supermarkets are gone with the wind but QCS is still running but as a normal local grocery store.

QDC is the only entity of Qatar Airways making money, why on earth would they even consider closing it, unless they wont to close down QA at the same time?

By anonymous• 12 Aug 2010 17:43
anonymous

The locals buy their booze on the black market, why not let them use QDC and then they would have no reason to shut it down.

Closing QDC makes no sense unless you ban the hotels selling it as well. If you are going to take a principaled stand make it on everything. Then it will be goodbye to many international events in Qatar, a sad day.

By anonymous• 12 Aug 2010 17:38
anonymous

Even limiting the sale to 5 star hotels should not be allowed.

Ban it completely or allow it normally, why is it so hard to take a decision on alcohol.

will imnpact Qatar's attemtps to open up and be seen as "non-Muslim friendly"? What about recruitment from the West? It seems like a very strange move for a country that is bidding for the World Cup.

What exactly does Qatar want to be?

The sell of liquor is permitted to Qatar airways only, which also operates QDC. As many of you are aware , it's only a matter of time till QDC is shutdown and sell of alcohol will be limited to 5 star hotels. Most of the local public is pushing for that & it's in the advisory council agenda for some time now as it violates Qatar constitution.

Permit for selling pork can never be passed by authorities without the approval/recommendation of both ministries & advisory council. And this will not happen anytime soon ;)

Spinneys is an "English" minded supermarket - so its products are more swayed to the Brits & Commonwealth tastes.

Carrefour is a "French" minded supermarkey - and likewise is slanted to the French taste.

Hence, you will find some product lines not offered by Carrefour, and for people like me, makes me happy, as they also carry some limited Australian lines as well - such as cheese, chocolates, cake mixes, cream, honey, etc. (The cake mix is a cracker, as it uses proper fluor, God only knows what the other stuff is)
