Purchasing an internet router?

Sabrina
By Sabrina

Can one purchase a router in Qatar and connect it to Qtel's ADSL lines? My husband and I have 2 laptops and want to be able to connect them both to the internet. If so, where should one go to purhcase one? How much should I expect one to cost?

Anyone experianced the offer of internet wireless from Qtel in area without phone lines?

Just had installed, big mast on roof with a radio box and cat5 down to Airspan device on the wall, then have to connect a wifi access point to it and go from there.

Down side it hasnt worked yet, after hours of calls they agree that if lights flick on off it dont work and they will come and fix.

Any one seen or got this

The one I have is a Thomson Speedtouch provided by Q-Tel. They probably have newer models now and maybe different brands.

Again, I haven't seen DSL modems for sale in Qatar. Q-Tel has an exclusive monopoly and they provide the gear.

But if you do get your ADSL account you can bypass the modem and hook it up to a router; that way you'll have a wireless signal in your home and the added benefit of a hardware firewall.

The router will have ethernet.

And I think I've seen a VOIP handset in the market here.

Reason I need ethernet is to hook up VOIP if possible, I know that QTel blocked it but I read some people managed to find a way around it.

People also recommended I get the ADSL modem from Qatar because it uses UK DSL protocol not US protocol which makes sense I guess.

Which modem brands are sold in Qatar and can someone give me a model number

Thanks

I found the download speeds improve since I switched to ethernet and wireless..I dont know what could be the problem..it could also be the USB...

Our actual speeds are much lower anyway..I am sure you might have done a few speed tests to check USB and ethernet speeds...

Well it's none the worse for wear, tg.

I've bypassed it now and gone through a router, extra firewall not a bad thing, but it worked well when I had it hooked up.

My Q-Tel supplied modem doesn't have ethernet.

I think you can bring it with you..but its my submission that buying it from here will be better...since you can replace it if its not working....

All modems and routers have ethernet connections...

I completely understand, I am just asking other people about compatible modems

You have to understand that when you request DSL service from Q-Tel they include the modem whether you want it or not.

You can unplug it and install yours after they're gone.

I will get it with me when I arrive to Doha, but I just want to make sure that it will work there

I think Q-Tel has a monopoly on modems.

I've seen routers for sale in the market but never DSL modems.

You can try to bring one in but if it's coming in the mail or via courier it might get confiscated.

Will any of the following ADSL modems work with Qtel

D-Link DSL-300G

http://www.dlink.ca/broadband/product.php?BID=2

D-Link DSL-300T

http://www.dlink.ca/broadband/product.php?BID=3

Please let me know as it has Ethernet RJ45 output which I need

THanks

I need a modem only with ethernet output wihtout the wireless router. Can I buy Dlink ADSL modem from here and take it with me?

By tg• 22 Aug 2006 18:15
tg

D-Link is available at the Sofitel Hotel Computer market for QR 370 (Around $100)..

Dlink is easy to install..its a two step process..first do it the automatic way..and get the ip info...

then do it manually to set a wireless access...

You can have four wired and wireless lines...

Question:

Are all the modems provided by Q-Tel has a USB output? There is no Ethernet output?

So from what I am reading, I have to get a DSL modem with built in wireless router to overcome this problem, correct?

Or

Can i buy ADSL modem that gives me RJ45 output. I like to keep modem and router separate and which brand do you recommend for the ADSL modem - Linksys, D-Link or ???

Thanks

You can purchase routers in Doha; expect to pay around $100-150. One place would be Jarir Bookstore, there are a few other shops that stock them. As you want to connect laptops I would suggest bringing b/g PCI adapters with you as they sometimes run out of stock. I've seen Netgear and US Robotics routers here.

Sir

I also purchased US Robotics wireless ADSL router with USB printer -9108 .and configured for the Qtel adsl line .I have two computers like you not wireless .Now everything is ok except hotmail and msn messenger. I can not sign-in to hotmail from the login page ;it gives page can not be displayed message .and msn gives error code 8004820 .I tried latest windows live messenger ;also gives same error code ;same time connection test pass.

its really the problem of the router because when I use dailup or connect directly using Q-tel speedtouch modem everything is ok.

my adsl settings is as follows

PPPoA ;VPI 8 ;VCI 35;encapsulation vcmux ;mode Gdmt.A

Can you please help me in configuring this router .

Madam

Did you configure router or shared internet

By pureminds• 4 Jun 2006 23:50

Well if u have an ADSL line and a system connected to it , then there are lots of ways to share internet connection from that system , as in ur case u have 2 laptops , then i think one of the lap top is already connected to the ADSL line and u r willing to share that line with another laptop, well , u can try the direct cable methode with cross patch over cable can solve ur requirements as both laptops has built in ethernet lan port , thats all ,connect both laptops with each other ,and run ICS software in windows , a setup is required which is not so difficult , that all.

Well the best I understand, aslong as our router is configured and works now with our laptop, which is does. Then when Q-tel gives me the modem I can plug the modem into our router through the big fat cable, then all will work. The router here has all the ports and DSL connections you mentioned earlier.

So we will see.

Bigdaddy,

I agree with VW.

We had some local guy install a router in our building and we could not get some sites. We got in another guy and he found that the router was configured to the UAE internet and hence the set up could not be used here. We had to change the router.

Better buy a router from the traders at Sofitel. You might pay extra, but atleast it will work.

All the best.

Angelo

Well I will bring mine from Canada and see, it sure is a lot cheaper. Excellent brand name for 180QR. I'll show the technican here your response on routers and see if it has the right capabilities.

Thanks

Make your house wireless.

You can have your computers anywhere then. I bought my belkin wireless router from computer souk for QR550 and connected it to adsl instead of the qtel one no problems

Bigdaddy

You can't use your Cdn router because it doesn't have a DSL modem built in (or does it?).

Q-Tel only provide USB ADSL modems which cannot be connected to basic routers which require ethernet communications, not USB.

Q-Tel prohibit sharing of wireless between users in different residences (same as all ISP's), but they'd never know unless someone told...

We use a wireless router as well (1 desktops, two laptops) and it is great, although the speed is a bit slower than wired (2nd desktop is wired and always has a faster connection than the others...

We bought it locally, at the computer souq... sorry, can't remember the price, but will post again if it comes to me...

ETA: you could technically share a wireless connection with your neighbour, but personally I wouldn't want to do that *long term* unless I had spoken to them and they were OK with it... are you going to know your neighbours that well that soon? hmmm...

By my standards, internet connection here is not too expensive, and well worth it... I say go it yourself...

I would never set up an unsecured wireless network... and I hope for their sake not too many people out there are, either!

Curious what you think. We are coming from Canada, I have a wireless router, I was thinking of bringing it. I'd need to get a converter which would cost about 60QR. One would it work there and two, you think it would just be simpler to buy another one there?

Also if someone in our building has a wireless router, couldn't we just use there signal, maybe even pay them a bit for the use?

Thanks

I bought one yesterday at Jarir Bookstore: US Robotics wireless ADSL router with USB printer server for QR.420.

This would allow you to connect wirelessly two laptops from anywhere in your house to the internet at the same time, as well as print to a common printer located at the router's location.

It also has 4 wired ports if you have computers with ethernet ports only (not wireless).

Or just get a router cable long enough - around QAR15 :)

I use it at home - we have 2 laptops as well. All you have to do is set up one of your laptops to share internet connection, and that's all.

Hiya!

Well, you would find DSL Router at the Sofetel Hotel and would cost about 425 QAR. Have a look there and good luck!

Cheers ! :)
