Help Buying Gold in Doha, Qatar : Help from the ladies in here...

Greeker
By Greeker

I am going home early next month and am in need of some advice... on gold shopping for my sister...sigh! I told my mom that i was bad at it, but she will have none of it, so here i go...without knowing what i am doing...

So this is my predicament, are there any answers out there?

a) Where do i buy gold biscuits/coins from? (NO, i am NOT talking about shiploads of it.)

b) Which shop offers competitive prices AND is trusted? (The shop on the left side of the road to Timbuktu, of course)

c) What is the price of gold now? (Aint i a dumbo?) Is there any way for me to check somewhere?

d) How much duty would i have to pay at the airport? How much is the amount of gold i can take with me without being taxed? (I will be going to Kochi International Airport in kerala. I would appreciate it if somebody who passed through this could advice me...)

e) Is gold available from trust exchanges? How good are they?

I know i am asking too many questions here, but hell, thats what QL is for, lol.

Needless to say, any help would be appreciated from the bottom of my heart. If somebody decided to help me in my shopping adventure, they shall be treated to a Cappuccino (or a coffee of their choice) by a grateful gold hunter (Aint too sure about too many responses for that, but hell, there aint a problem in asking, is there? hehe).

So long, and thank you once again!

Recently I took my gold to one of the regular shops I go to & asked them to weigh all items for me separately since I wanted to sell them. When I came home & compared the grams mentioned from the shop & on the receipts I was totally shocked because if the original gold weighed 20.10 they mentioned on the bill 22.20 ... so you can see the difference ... I saw this on all the receipts the difference was like this only .... so one tip is if you have a small weighing scale with you n you can weigh at the time of buying in front of the sales person they wont be able to cheat you for these extra milligrams & grams.

the "making charges" depend upon the design, the more intricate it is the costlier it gets.

Moreover Greeker you dont need any escort as the 10 tola gold biscuit prices are almost the same all over Qatar. if you really want to buy gold biscuits buy them from Dubai as dubai does not has any tax on gold.

A piece of advice. My dad was in the gold business and he incured huge losses. so think before you buy gold as an investment

Canara Jewellers is more reliable than alukkas/sky/atlas.

Kamran,

I checked with shops behind Al-Fardan exchange it seems they are more smarter man. What they will do they will tell gold price like 72 if alukas or damas saying 74 and put making charges in range of 10-16 it was an horriable experience Finally I settled with Damas as I can at least trust I am getting proper gold.

There are two options for you to buy gold.

1.) Raw gold that is 24 Ct comes in form of coin and biscuit.

2.) Gold ornaments which is varied from 18Ct to 22 Ct. Never ever go for 18ct.

Suppose if you got gold in form of coin and biscuit then most probably you would like to make a jewelry in India and will give this gold to some gold merchant for making an ornament for you If i am you I will never give bcuz you give 24 Ct to this jewelers and you will be not sure to get 22ct gold ornament from there. its my experience and no trader is more smarter then Indian jewelers so they can easily fool you.

Second option is to buy gold ornament for mother and sister which comes in 22ct form which is worth it you will get pretty good design from damas,Atlas and Alukas to name few I trust this as this are brands.

Now the big deal will be on making charges as the making charges are varied from bangles to necklace to sets so you need to be good here to bargain. They will quote to from 8 to 16 riyas per gram for making charge and tell you that they don't get any profit on this there is custom baldiya tax and blah blah..

So u need to do your research for that I found out that 4 Riyals or less are charged as custom duty and .50 as baldiya tax. So u need to be really good bargainer to reduce the cost on making charges.

Go with your instinct and select a design I am sure they will like it a smile on your mother and sis face is not less an achievement.

Disclaimer: I am not in anyways related to any of the jeweler’s shops. It’s all my personal experience which I gained in past 10 days looking for better deals from jewelry shops.

You guys got lot more information than us.. Kamran….sounds like an expert....

Greeker you need ladies escort only if you are buying Ornaments, for selecting good trendy designs. Buying bars and coins is not that difficult...you cant handle me and han together ...... so I will join you next time..lol right han???

Paul..just my two cents worth....lol

Greeker makin a stop over in Bahrain is worth for Tola bars and Khaleeji designs, Doha has chic Italian and Turkish designs

1 tola = 180 grains

1 tola = 11.66 grams

1 tola = 0.375 troy ounces

5 tolas = 1.875 troy ounces

10 tolas = 3.75 troy ounces

thank you for the feedbacks. i am not looking at buying gold jewellery. I am particularly looking for buying biscuits/coins. My mom SPECIFICALLY told me that, seems like she trusts my nose for design too much, lol. Hehe.

Anyways, thanks for your info. Sharat, nopes, my sis isnt getting married, But we are just keeping it for the future, hehe. But you guys say that gold prices are up now... should i reconsider buying it from someplace else?

I might be able to get you the gold coins/biscuits at below the market price but you dont take the receipt when buying. The problem is that when you take the receipt its adds up in the tax that the seller has to pay to the Government. Moreover dont buy gold ornaments /jewellery in Qatar as you can get better designs in india. plus the gold prices are very high at the moment so think agin before you go on a gold buying spree.

the best place to buy gold would be behind Alfardan Centre in front of the Karwa stand. You will see 100s of gold shops there. I suggest that you do not buy from Alukkas and Damas as they charge a very high "making" rate. If you know anyone who has a gold shop he might get you very good deals. You might be able to get "old gold" from people who sell. The people who sell gold to the shop owners just get gold price and they never get the "making charges". Any more questions i will be glad to answer them

Hey buddy...looks like u r in a bit of a fix here...well to tell u the simple things abt Gold...the bench rate at which Gold is sold always remains the same mostly in any shop that u go...but where it all matters is in something that is called the Making Charges of ornaments...this is where the shops and agents make their money...so when u go to buy Gold from any shop be it Damas, Alukkas, or Sky Jewellers... try to see what u like, the design, the weight and then nego on the Making Charges...normally to my knowledge making charges ranges from about 5- 8 Riyals (if i m not wrong) per gm, normally shops are asking rates of easily about 8 or 10 riyals per gm...so try to keep that making charges at the bare minimum...and the last time i met u...i remember that u r from Kerala...so try to sweet talk in Malayalam and consider ur job done...

So when u travelling and how many days is the vacation dude...ur sister's marraige or soemthing...if yes then congrats...if no...then all the best for pleasing the 2 best ladies in ur life (UR mom and ur sis)...pleasing both of them at the same time with so much min knowledge in shopping of Gold is a big big task ahead dude...

So cheers...

Let me know how u go in this Treasure Hunt...

Bye...

Sarat...

Where are you these days? probably busy finishing of your chores before the holidays...

when are you going on holiday? Is you place free from Chicken Guinea? Everyday more and more people are effected with this fever. You better be careful lock yourself in the room and wrap yourself in a mosquito net…..lol

a) For Jewelry you may getcompetitive price, because making charge varies from shop to shop. But for Coins and Bars its almost same price everywhere.

b) You can buy Gold from any trusted Jewelry like, Damas, Allukas, Sky, Atlas etc. Some times when the price is fluctuating these jwelers say that coins/Bars are out of stock. You can get good ones in Alfardan Jewelry,

c) Gold bars are 24ct, which is slightly more priced than 22ct, It think it is QR.78/gm, you get bars 5gm,10gm,,5 tola , 10 tola ( approx. 116 gms) etc.

d) No idea about the custom duty, for Jewelry there is no duty unto 10 sovereigns. For each passenger, but I don’t know if it's applicable for bars and coins.

e) I think Alfardan Exchange sells Gold Bars/Coins.

Greeker, update for you.

you can buy gold biscuits from Gulf Exchange that is located near Sky jewellers and behind Al Fardan.

biscuits are cheaper than coin and if you ask anyone in that are they will direct you to Gulf Exchange.

This is supposed to be the apt place to buy biscuits.

try here and if still unsuccessful, then we will do something.

considering the gold rates, if you buy me a gold coin too, i shall take you for gold shopping.

also, if you have SL's contact number, he did mention that he knows places where they wil give you the best gold price. serious....so do give him a shout to help out a friend.

i usually buy from damas, like their style and designs, but expensive.

damas, canara jewellers, sky jewellers, alukkas are all trusted shops.

just go to share kahraba street and you will find these shops there.

mostly keralites there and they will help you.

i dont think gold is available from trust exchanges, heard it for the first time.

the last i heard was the gold price hovering at 75 riyals per gram. may be higher or lower.

http://goldprice.org/gold-price-per-gram.html

site tells you how to buy gold coins.
