Doha • Lulu Hypermarket is offering technological support to all outlets in Qatar that are interested in introducing eco-friendly plastic shopping bags.
Lulu recently introduced bio-degradable plastic bags in all its outlets in Qatar as part of an ongoing green initiative.
"We are the first in the GCC to introduce this type of plastic bags and we are ready to help others who are interested in this initiative," Lulu's Regional Director, Mohammed Altaf, told The Peninsula yesterday.
These bio-degradable plastic bags can be disposed of with other waste as they decompose in two to six months.
These bags are made using an exclusive German technology. A special ingredient is added to the plastic that helps the material to decompose fast, said Altaf.
"Our motto is to promote an eco-friendly environment in Qatar and we are ready to share this technology with other interested companies."
It is hard to differentiate the new bags from the old ones, except that they are slightly thinner. "They are as good and strong as the old bags. The technology is certified by the European Union and the United Nations Environment Programme," said Altaf.
He said the new bags are costlier than the conventional bags. He, however, promised the extra cost will not be passed on to the customers.
