I have bought a camera from Amazon (shifted through Aramex) valued @ $2000 and was charge a tax of QR 191 by Qatar Customs. Aramex informed me that goods valued over QR 5000 ($1390) is subject to tax.
if you order in company name(you can put your company name as address but not in the name) then its more complicated and the custom duty goes up to 1000 riyal..
its all about your luck..i even bought item more then 1000$ without any custom duty.
some tips:
1-Ask the shipper to keep the original invoice(they might be a penalty if they dont see the original invoice on the box)
2-Ask the shipper to keep lower value on the box
3-Do not more then 3 item in same model or shape(let say 4 Apple Ipod or 4 PSP)
5-better Avoid bringing more then 3 phones(required ICT Approval and end up with loots of trouble..sometime missing phones)
6-Try to use your personal POB then the company one..if they see company POB they will think its for company use or for selling..since the company is a profit making institution they will charge customs..
that all buddy..have a happy shopping and jst cross your finger till you got call from the delivey boy..
Let me tell you about this as I have much experience in this matter.
When there is an invoice of more than QR 500, you always stand a chance of having to pay customs.
Certainly if it is expressed. Lower chance if through the mail. Dont ask me why but it is just lower chance if it comes through the post office.
Your best is to have forwarded to family in the states then have them resend it USPS global priority WITHOUT an invoice.
You can ask Amazon not to include an invoice but i dont think they will.
Customs here in Qatar is certainly one of the most unfair entities you ever wish to come into contact with.
For starters, if your final invoice cost is inclusive of the shipping charge, customs will include it as part of your QR500 limit. Can you believe it? Ridiculous. And there is no way around it. So the QR 500 limit is not just the cost of the merchandise as it should be.
When I learned that I lost total respect for the customs authority as a cash hoarding beureacratic unethical entity. So it is imperative you make sure at least the shipping charge is off that invoice paper.
If the charge is just %5 as it should be there would be no problem, but the add-ons charged make it impractical to bring items in.
