Cost (per hour) of casual labor?

By Expat Sueño

Is there a "standard" rate for casual labor here in Qatar? I had some maintenance guys from my compound assemble some shelves for me, which took a total of eight hours (four hours for each of the two guys). I paid them 100QR each, which worked out to 25QR/hour. I felt like it was a decent rate, but was it?

I also need to have a large BBQ grill and a storage shed assembled...these aren't rocket science, but they are definitely more complicated than the shelves. Would I pay them the same rate for tasks that are slightly more difficult?

Thanks,

I asked around and depends on compound as well.

Where more expensive Western people are living, they pay up to 35 QR per hour.

Other compounds pay 20-25 QR per hour.

This is all for cleaning, ironing, or babysitting.

But I guess it is still high paid. As the workers on the compound only get 3-4 QR per hr.

in my company, depends on the nationality of the labour. some get 30 QR a day and some get 20.

DO you pay the cleaning ladies/maids the same fee? So 25 QR per hour or is it less?

Thanks for letting me know...

He told me that they've had heaps of projects to do at work and that he'll come over tomorrow to assemble the BBQ. My husband is betting that we have "mystery parts" left over after it is all assembled. . .hmm. The adventure continues. . .

You paid a decent Rate & definitely they will be happy. You can pay the same rate for the BBQ Shelf assembling also.If u want to pay more its upto you.

When you want work to be done and you get one of the guys to do it for them. You should discuss the price ahead of time. Settle on that. That rate should be fair but not OTT. Then when they have finished, done a good job and not broken anything, give them a little extra. Dont set precedences by over paying them. Be fair & just.

You are right.. I like to pay per job as well, especially around the Ramada area..

25QR/hr is more than the standard rate, once you start paying much, you can't go back. I have had this experience before, and now they won't come for a small job.

Paying per job is way better than paying per hour since you still have the upper hand... I totally agree with "Justbecause", compounds' maintenance workers are getting all the advantages of being there, we have two in our compound and they are wealthy like kings :)

Expat, you've paid a very fair rate considering they probably get 3 or 4 Riyals an hour for their day job!

If they are not happy to take your money, I'm sure there are more who will be.

Did you Google it first?

Justbecause.....

Its because they know westerners are walking ATM's. Dont feel sorry for them, give them the going rate and give any tips money you want to the labourers on the working sites who need it more and will appreciate it.

They know they'll get paid. . .I'm just not sure why they expect a bloody pot of gold at the end. 25QR/hour isn't much less than the immigrants in the U.S. are illegally paid and I would think it's more expensive for them to be in the U.S. than it is for these guys to be here. . .at least given that housing/food is covered for the compound guys.

I actually felt like I received the dog poo look as well and was a bit surprised. They know about the other things that need to be assembled and haven't come back to do them, so I guess they are expecting more. Good grief, though, 25QR/hour for assembling things seems like a reasonable wage around here; I'm going to guess that they aren't getting paid like that by the compound. . .

QR25 is fine! I don't do tips anymore, I'm very British in that respect.....if they do an outstanding service I may give a bit more if not they get basic pay......

The dog poo expression is quite normal, and it takes time to perfect it.... even if you give them 10,000 QR for 5 minutes work, they would think that since you gave that much, you can surely give more.

I would usually give a 50, and then another 50 after they whine (after the dog-poo expression)... Then I would say this is much more expensive than it used to be, I'm not giving anything more.

Sorry, Alpha_Wolf. We purchased it in the U.S. and put it in our shipment (still flat-packed). I have seen storage sheds at Carrefour, but I don't know how much they cost or how good they are.

Thanks for the info, djkiller. Will be interested to see if anyone else chimes in.
