Depending on your friend's capability, and subject matter a point and shoot might be adequate. If he/she is really interested in photography as a hobby though, they should really do their own in depth research first. Buying an expensive camera doesn't necessarily make you a great photographer!

Nikon d90 or canon550d.both are mid range expensive.
But like someone said up here,do some research before buyIng it.go online and chk out the specs.Salam sells both.or buy it from souq on installment.
Currently Im holding Canon 450d w/ standard 18-55mm
but I would suggest you to go for Nikon D90 w/ 18-105mm lens since Canon 550d inferior by D90
