Ivanhoe. I know things take time, but ... will the space grow? Like with time walls move, and it will become a big place, with lots of space, nice chairs and lots of books?

Man, you have a TOY STORE, with some bookshelves, get real. You;ve worked for Barnes and Noble, didn't you? Stop fooling yourself.

Delivery charge for Amazon is ZERO. Plus 8USD per half kg which I pay to ARAMEX.

I do like most of John Grisham, and some of Danielle Steele but Jarir still sucks. Very few new novels if any...All very old stock at least what I've been able to find. Not impressed in the least.

That is a major disapointment to hear what the new bookstore in City Center is going to be like!

Everyone knows where Q-Tel is in the City Centre. Above that is Starbucks, above that is Nokia. They are behind Nokia.

Terramax - You should know that these things take time. And with censorship it is hard to purchase some adult stock. But one book at a time and things will improve. And besides - too cosy and everyone will start smoking there too. And the delivery charge for Amazon...

Jarrir - Lots - they are more interested in Computers than books.

What is right about it? Its selection of novels is laughable. I guess its okay if you like Danielle Steele and John Grisham. Otherwise, it really sucks.

Maybe the thread should be titled "almost bookstore open"!

Ivanhoe, it is difficult to find it. If you don't know where it is you will never find it.

And, I repeat, is small and cluttered with no "bookstore ambience", I know you did what you could, but this is not a "major breakthrough on a Qatari market" not even a contender to Jarir... in fact as I said it is a toy store with some bookshelves.

In Turkish language there is no letter "Q", my friend, and as it is already said to be 'today is a good day to die' in Klingon', let me show how this sentence would be if it was written in Turkish also:

"Bugün ölmek için güzel bir gün"

;)

But chain stores all start to look the same. Wanted to make something better and more adaptable to the local market. This is work in progress.

Glad to see you found us. Not too difficult then... :)

Will not make a major difference. I went to see this bookstore today during the lunch. This is a small corner store 80% dedicated to ... toys and children education goods. There are 5 or 6 bookcases which will be probably filled with books. Definitely not a NEW MAJOR BOOKSTORE as it was advertised.

Now, a major bookstore (at least in the Middle East) is Magrudy's in Dubai City Centre. The bookstores actually not about books - they are about ambience. You can order any book through amazon.com and have it here in less than a week.

What is essential is to have an nice ambience, where you can sit down, look through the books, make up your mind.

The place you are opening is cluttered and defeintely not about ambience. Also having kids choosing their toys doesn't help (not that I have anything against kids). And it is just too small to be able to achieve the goal.

Btw. Ivanhoe, didn't you negotiate a job offer with Magrudy's?

Ivanhoe "almost open" sounds like "almost pregnant"? Your shop is either open or not.

How about a new Star Trek / Sci-fi thread please!

Klingon! Wow! I never knew about this till this day. Never been a sci-fi fan, maybe that explains it. Anyway, you live and learn.

It means 'today is a good day to die' in Klingon.

Jolene - What's "Heghlu'meH QaQ jajvam"? Is that Turkish for something?

Regarding books and bookstores in Doha, can anyone here point me to someplace where I can buy or borrow Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

But I'm concerned about the inshallah that follows the "it WILL open soon"

Inshallah, that means that it will not open before 2008
