Sorry teenagers, Qatar drivers don't want you on the road

Do you think it would be a good idea to grant teenagers (aged 16 to 18) a temporary driving license?

We had a piece up earlier, and then we tweeted it to find out how people in Qatar feel about this.

This is what the community thinks.

NO!!! But we all know that its not gonna happen....life will continue as usual. My suggestion is don't let youngsters below the age of 21 to drive cars powered with not more than 1000 cc engine....have them drive cars like Kia picanto, Suzuki Alto or Celerio, etc etc....that way they will realize what expats go thru on the roads when they drive and will also appreciate life better when cross the age of 21 and drive big cars.

Answer is NO after a whole family lost their lives this EID on the airport road due to such mistakes. The painful part is the kid will go free since he is local after murdering a whole family, well we should not expect much from countries who don't offer citizenship to anyone even if you live there for 100yrs, Locals will always go free with murder and all sort of crimes, I have seen that already. In my country you will be hang and they will revoked your citizenship.

So are you saying that those 12-year-olds that I have seen driving around do not have licenses?

By Anonymous• 16 Oct 2014 16:22

An age limit on drivers' licenses seems like a good idea judging by the types of driving I, and many others, have witnessed on Qatar's roads. May I suggest 40-years-old as a starting point?

Very good comment Contrails. when driving laws are enforced properly, consistently and fairly. And adults lead by example, driving safely iunstead of exhibiting dangerous driving on the roads around Doha, accompanied by their children sitting next to them, the answer should be NOOOOO.

Road accidents is the first cause of death amongst Qatari population.

It all depends on the upbringing of the teenagers. If as a child a teenager has been taught at home to obey rules and regulations and punished for violations, he surely will behave on the roads when he grows up, with a car or without one.

No way. I think the age limit should increase o 20 .A young lad was almost near to kill me and my three kids last week with a Land cruiser due to his careless rude arrogant driving.

I have driven in most Countries in the world and without doubt the drivers here are the rudest, insolent, most aggressive , arrogant people behind the wheel of Big Powerful Motor cars!.... Can you imagine if the Children of these drivers are let loose on the road. With Authorities that are powerless to enforce laws to their own citizens! NO! The roads are dangerous enough as it is!!

paul: stating that their road sense is non-existent implies the possibility that they may actually be aware of such a concept; they are not, they have never heard of this term before and thus it doesn't show in the driving:-)

There may be a fantastic opportunity here.

Consider granting a temporary license to teenagers but with the provision that they undertake an extended and intensive training course including off road, skip pan and even motorcycle riding.

That way the majority of the young drivers will become the benchmark for good driving habits and safer driving which will hopefully filter down to other drivers who's road sense is non existent.

I think a lot of countries of the world does this and they don't even have radars and proper traffic laws like Russia you can get a temp license and we are fine with it

as a car crazed adult who was once a car crazed teenager; i say no..even as a teenager i was rarely the wild reckless type but having a car, especially a fast one at your fingertips definitely puts maturity and responsibility in the back seat..or in the trunk if your friends are in the back seat..

When my kids turned 16, they acquired their driving licenses back in my home country. That is the legal driving age. They are both careful, cautious drivers and I trust them with my vehicle.

But in my country, driving laws are enforced properly - consistently - fairly. And penalties include having your license revoked.

Until Qatar implements similar road policing, then the answer is a resounding "NO WAY!!".

And it's not just the teenagers. I have seen adults exhibiting dangerous driving on the roads around Doha, with their laughing teenager sitting beside them. So who do you think teenagers in Qatar are going learn from?
