UK CRB check for residency

My name is Andrew. I am a British citizen. Let's say it is my intention to arrange a job in Doha and then reside there to do it.
The US-centric site of the State Department here
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1003.html
says:
To obtain a residence permit in Qatar , the Government of Qatar usually requires foreign citizens to provide a police clearance certificate from their home countries.
Whereas the UK Criminal Records Bureau site here
http://www.crb.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=381
says:
The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves.
I have no criminal record and the CRB is mainly to stop sex offenders getting access to children. But how do I provide a "police clearance certificate" to the Qatari authorities as a British citizen. Does the employer have to request it on my behalf. Would an employer with lots of ex-pats have experience of this or do I have to talk to the UK police myself? Does anyone have experience of how this is done? Thanks.
I don't think UK nationals have to provide a police clearance certificate any more.
Either way, you don't need your company to request a police check, you can do it yourself.
