New passport, what happens to the visa?

I need to renew my passport very soon but the Qatari visa stamped on it will expire in 2008. I wonder, what happens to the visa when I get a new passport? Do they need to duplicate it on the new passport or can I just carry old and new passport together when traveling? Does anyone know?

Hey 000

I had this done 2 mnths back. My passport had to be renewed.

This is the process

1. you get your passport renewed from your embassy.

It takes 5 working days to get the new passport ( the validity will be 1 yr initially and then after 45days they upgrade the validity.

2. Once you get the new passport you can take it to your emmigration dept in your office and ask them to trasfer the RP to the new passport. This takes 2-3 days. Thats it after which you can use the new passport alone.

just the two passports, explaining to them that you got a new passport and want the visa to get transfered to the new one. I was referring to my friend :), he was the one that told me: I'm sorry buddy, it is done and takes no more than 5 minutes. He wished that it would take more so we can talk more than that :)

Good Luck Buddy

No need to be sorry, that’s the best thing I could hope for :)

So you basically didn’t need other document or anything of any sort just old and new passport, is that right?

of mine was there. He was my classmate and we talked about a lot of things on these 5 minutes, he gave me the passport back and .. sorry it does not take more than 5 minutes buddy. I will catch you later somewhere ... :)

Abc - “lazy, lethargic and downright incompetent” is an understatement when speaking about the HR in my company … and that’s exactly what worries me guys! If I needed some sort of help from them it might take centuries to get things sorted and since I am planning to take some holidays in June I would hate to get stuck because of this!

King Edshel – boy do I like what you say!!! How sure are you about that? It would solve all my problems!

When you send your old passport to get renewed, they will attach both of them the new and the old. When you get them back just go to the immigration and they will cancel both, the old passport and old visa and issue you a new visa with the same details of the old one.

Don't worry about it, should take nothing more than 5 minutes to print the new visa and stick it on the new passport.

Looks like I was late in posting this, I was in Sealine and come before a while .. :)

If you get all teh documents from your sponsor yourself and submit them personally at Visa office in Madina Khalifa, it normally takes 3-5 days. However, if you are working in a Q company like QP, QAFCO, QAPCO etc. you must give about 3-4 weeks for the process to complete since the HR people in these companies are lazy, lethargic and downright incompetent.

we have renewed our permit once ... and i took around 3 weeks through QP. My advice give plenty of time spare when you change your visa to new passport ... make sure you not arranging your new trip till you get your passport + visa document sorted

Thanks a lot everybody!

Cygnet – when did you have to renew your passport? Was it a long time ago? Do you still travel with old and new passport together?

Scorpio – do you remember how long it took to get the visa duplicated on your new passport? Does it take ages as usual or is it a quick and smooth process?

my passport just expired this month and my working visa was on it. but before the expiration date, i happen to renewed the thing last month and also did inform our office about it. According to them... Yes, they have to transfer your qatari visa to your new passport, which it did happen to me and our liason officer asked 50 riyals for it...... Only in qatar they do that or middle east...,,, i guess. co'z i've worked in other countries like brunei and even singapore, they dont do that, they just staple your new and old passport together without transerring the visa to your new passport and during traveling, immigration officers just ask about the old passport.it's a different system they have.......anyway, i hope this info will help you....

It did happen to me.. but I honestly dont remeber what I did... well I'm not sure I think you keep your old passport with you, for the time being. thats it.. u still need to check on this.

You could pop this question to the embassy.. I'm sure the'll help.
