Medical - PPD and sputum test

HasanT
By HasanT

Hello, 2 weeks after my arrival I went to get the medical done. At first they did the blood test, then called me for an x-ray, few weeks later called me again to do the PPD test. I guess the result on PPD came positive and I was referred to medical commission at Hamad hospital for sputum test. But Hamad asked me to come back after 2 months for the test. I have never had TB or never been exposed to a patient who had it. Just wondering anyone else going through similar situation? I am trying to prepare for the worse ....what will happen if the spatum test comes back positive as well. Please share your experience if you went through anything similar. All your inputs are much appreciated.

Hi everyone..I have been reading the threads and I am in a similar situation. I done xray, skin test that resulted in 15mm, and 2 times sputum. After the sputum sampling at Hamad they asked me to come back after more than a month. I really am worried as nobody can give me answers so I am trying maybe someone here can enlighten me. I was curious so I checked online but though I smoke I never had any symptoms of active tb. Some are saying not to worry because I work in retail yet I dont wanna be lax for it is not a valid stand. I am praying to God for things to get well but of course my mind is boggled until this is all over. Please give me any feedback for any information will be surely helpful. Thanks...

I also did my X-ray in different additional angles. I never had TB or any related symptoms. Then after 2 days I got a SMS to report to room no 118 (but I was directed to a different room) and they gave me PPD injection and asked me to report back in 2 days. The reading in 2 days was zero (I supposed ie negative) but surprisingly after 6 days I got another SMS to report room to no 117 (again I was directed to a different room) and took blood samples ( 3 separate samples - I suppose that is also to verify TB). They take these blood samples only on Sundays & Tuesdays (as I understood) They said it will take about another week to out results. So far I have already spent 3 weeks from my 1st visit to Medical Commission.

Can anybody say do I surely get these results in a week? What will be the next? I am really frustrated.

Hi HasanT,

My sputum tests results were negative, but had to give a sample of my blood the next day. An appointment was again scheduled for me to see a doctor, who then put me on latent TB medication for 6 weeks, on a weekly basis. I started my medication cycle a few days ago.

2 days later, i am eligible for finger-printing and had already done so. I am eagerly waiting for my Qatar ID card to land onto my waiting hands. Only then a proper life here can start.

The wait is long, but i hope you will not lose heart. Hang in there and i hope things will turn out just fine for you.

Hi HasanT,

No, i have not heard back from them and i am not hoping so much from them as well. I only look forward to my appointment date, which my HR is trying to bring to an earlier date.

I doubt deportation is a likely scenario. As this is a test for latent TB, a positive result will usually require the patient to be prescribed with medicine for a period of time. Back home, the patient will have to report to a polyclinic and swallow the pills in the presence of a nurse. In case of absence, an arrest warrant will be churned out.

According to my HR staff, i am the first case in the organisation. Much of my knowledge on this matter came from friends who are nurses back home. Hope these help.

Hi uluwatu06,

Thank you for sharing your experience. You mentioned that if the sputum test is negative, you would be informed within a week. Have you heard back on that yet? If all the tests come back positive, would I be deported? Or given medication to take? I don't know anyone went through the same experience that's why asking. Do you know anything about that? If you do, please share! Highly appreciated and good luck to you as well.

Hi HasanT,

I am undergoing this same series of tests as you. I have just given the 2 sputum samples last week at Rumailah Hospital. Like you, i have never been exposed to anyone with TB, nor do i cough. I do not have any outstanding medical condition and i exercise rather regularly. Additionally, i am from a first world country where i have been subjected to all the various vaccinations early in my life.

The sputum test that we did is an AFB Smear and Culture (S/C) test. I was informed that the turnaround time is 1 month. But if the smear result is negative, by right, you would be informed in a week's time.

I am frustrated as without a Qatar ID, i am unable to purchase a car, open a Current Account (my Savings Account has already been blocked due to the 90 days regulation) and get the post-dated cheques for my accomodation rental, subscribe to post-paid mobile service, process my health card etc.

My next appointment is in August. I hope the tests would prove negative and i am able to proceed with the finger-printing procedure.

You are not alone, HasanT.

It depends. If your are working in Blue Collar jobs then the rules are tough, but if you are a professional then you will be treated for 3-6 months depending on your chest X-ray finding. If you are in the later category then you need not worry.
