Getting a visa with a criminal record?

hi everyone, my husband is anticipating (hoping) for a job offer in Qatar. We already have passports for our entire family and he has left the country and travelled many times so imagine our surprise when we got a criminal record check (to be prepared) and a mischief charge from 1988 (when he was 17- disturbing the peace) showed up. To get a pardon in Canada takes 18-24 months right now so does anyone know if you CAN still be approved for a work visa if there is a minor, old charge on your record...? or if it's as simple as "a record is a record" and he will lose this opportunity? Thanks so much in advance for any opinions.

Westwood, you don't apply for a residency or a work visa, your sponsor does.

If you don't have a sponsor you won't get either of the above.

Not sure about a business visa though

If the job is in education a police report from your home country (or the country where you currently reside) is required.

Better to bring this up with the employer before they "discover" it on their own. This would be grounds for dismissal/termination in nearly every job if you are asked if you have a criminal record (no matter how old or minor) and you fail to divulge it - in Canada or Qatar.

i can honestly tell you that you need to have a police check and produce this. I am in the same boat as you westwood but i declared mine and an account when applying for the post. My file is now with legal department - state of Qatar. The last thing you want is to be deported upon arrival so inform prospective employers, get your check done attested and send it to them before you make the move. were you convicted or was it a caution

Would really appreciate some advice on this.

I am looking to work in Qatar and have a criminal record from 20 years ago for an assault that took place when I was 18 and at uni.

I am looking to stay for one year and would like to know which type of permit (work or residence) i should apply for and will i require to produce a police certificate for this??

Any advice on this would be really appreciated.

not true about 1 year and police clearance :o)

we're bringing 300 peopple from all around the world (all nationalities) in the next 3 months, and we know directly from the government that they don't need police clearance.

they don't check police record for work permit. it's only required for 2-3 years residence permit (not for the annual one) or for a change sponsorship - so as long as your hubby's job is a good one and he's sure he'd not be changing, you should be fine :o)
