Can Someone Please Explain The Whole Story?

So - how does it all work, the visa / work permit / Residency Permit / Sponsorship. Can one dear soul please either explain, or point me to another thread which as the details?

BTW Mods - why do you not put up a 'Sticky' to cover the most common FAQ's?

I'm in Saudi, is it a similar process?

I get sponsored by the employer. THey arrange for medical. Once this clears I get my Iqama ( Residency Permit). Once I get this, I can get other things ( eg bank account, rented property, car, mobile etc etc ) .

What about visa - do I get on on first arrival, or does the employer issue me with a 'work visa' before I get there?

Does the sponsor retain the passport like in Saudi?

If the family want to visit ( from the UK ) do they need a visa in advance - I thought it was a visit visa on arrival?

Any info greatly appreciated.

There is a clear law on it, Soniya.

LP, my husband's passport remains with his employer..i think i should file a case against them ASAP..:)

They are violating the LAW where they know an employee can't leave DOHA without having an EXIT PERMIT..

Keeping an employee's passport is illegal in Qatar.

You can negotiate about this with your company..

But in most of the cases, it is employee's responsibility to make RESIDENCY PERMIT about his family...

Thanks again to all you luvverly people who have replied. It does sound very similar to KSA, except that the employers here keep the passpors of all their foreign staff.

So will the employer also 'sponsor' my wife, i.e will they also arrange for her Residency Permit, or is that down to me to negotiate with the company?

Should know by the end of the week whether I'll be coming or not.

Re Keidoupe: "I'm talking scorched earth....." Les Grossman - the best thing Tom Cruise has done for years!

As a UK passport holder, you can arrive on a visit visa and the company can convert once here.

You are recruited by a company, they send you a visa to enter the country.

once in country, you have a medical. If clear, then you have finger printing.

after this the company applies for your resident permit (Iqama)

once this is done (Can take anything from two weeks to a month), you are resident and cn now apply for a driving license.

Most companies do not keep your passport.

you need an exit/rentry to go on vacation. This is applied for by youtr company and is straight forward.

Some companies allow for multiple exit/reentry visas.

UK passport holders can visit and get visa on arrival.
