I guess it depends on what works best on you to stop smoking. As for me I could quit by gradual reduction of cigarettes consumed per day. I used a timer on my phone to know the time for the next smoke, sticking to this rule and adding 10 minutes to the timer's interval each day. That's how I managed to reduce amount of smokes from 30 to 0 per day. It took me around 3 months. The desire didn't just vanish though, I had to live with it for 4-5 more months. Now I really feel as a non-smoker for almost two years.
That was only a technique, I also needed a strong motivation. I really wanted that cough to go away. It made each cold that I caught much worse. I'm glad I don't have that kind of cough anymore.
But again, that way worked on me. I doubt any consultancy would have helped me better. Your way of quitting is your own. A lot of people try quitting abruptly without taking a long run for it - only few succeed.
