A local newspaper's statement that the government should encourage Qatari men to marry more than once as a solution to many Qatari females finding husbands, is a remark from the hip. The statement falls short as it neatly overlooks the realities of life. It is a fact that polygamous marriages experience a higher incidence of marital conflict, family violence, and family disruptions than do monogamous marriages. Moreover, children from polygamous marriages are at greater risk of of both behavioral and developmental problems. As for techn's suggestion that foreigner's should be allowed to marry Qatari females on selective basis is also myopic and not practical. The figurative shrinking of the globe no doubt allows the opportunity for greater intercultural marriages to take place but in such marriages the cultural parameters cause conflicts to multiply as the parents are hardly ever on the same page.
