We all have inherited 'empathy' in our nature from our ancestors. It is seen in all primates as well..like monkeys and chimps. This trait in us has contributed to formation of most religions in the world. So I guess it can't be forced externally by petty antics like these..some people are either more empathetic or less by nature and that can't be influenced. However, people do change over a long period of time living under different situations.
