Who decides what is normal and what is not? I think such hand holding practices among boys / men is discouraged in school and that sort of becomes the norm.
Methinks that these practices are not discouraged or looked down upon in villages and smaller towns and the men there feel a sense of friendship and camaraderie exists through physical touch.
The same could explain why some men grow a single finger nail in some cultures.
I also come from a culture where it is normal for good friends to walk with an arm over another's shoulder without eyebrows being raised.
It is not right to generalize all these practices as gay or alien.
That being said, I would feel uncomfortable if my hand is being held by another man for more than a couple of seconds and the reaction would be to wriggle out of it.

To each his own!
