More Japanese would have died in the invasion than by the nukes--if both Japanese and Allied estimates are to be believed. Allied estimates of its troop losses were in the hundreds of thousands.
Again, war is a horrible thing for which civilians pay a far greater price than a country's leaders. Any of the combatants that developed the bomb first would have used it. I for one am glad the US and not Hitler, Stalin or the Japanese military developed it first. Is there anyone out there that really thinks otherwise?
