1. don't buy too famous brands. they are not offering anything extra
2. look for the best configuration that suits your needs.
3. Personally i recommend Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus.
4. Depending on your budget you should look for the best options.
At the moment the best configurations that don't cost that much are core i5 Second Generation, 4 GB ram, 500+ GB Hard-Drive, 15.6 inch screen. The graphic card is a plus but not mandatory since i5 second generation has a pretty good integrated graphics (basically the better the CPU the better the graphics performance).
So at this time i would recommend:
Dell inspiron 15r: i5 SG, 500GB, 4 GB RAM, GT525M - 1GB graphic memory - this was bought by a friend of mine from sofitel with 2300QR.
Something cheaper than that:
Acer has some laptops that are very cheap but give very good performance. They are using some old CPU's brought back to life by the Second Generation from Intel (like Celeron).
This i have right now:
Acer Aspire 5349: Celeron b800 (dual-core), 2Gb ram, 320 GB HDD, 15.6" - bought also from sofitel with 1350 QR.
The performance is good since i'm playing games on it.
Now to answer:
What to look for:
Brand: NO! NOT EVER! brand is just a name and a logo. usualy that means increased prices just for the fact that u are a privileged user (like Apple MacCrap)
Design: Nope... u are buying to use not to look at it.
Price: Of course... Money counts after all
CPU: nowadays a dual core is the people's choice. so i5 Second Generation is a good option
RAM: preferably more than 2GB. Personally i recomend 4
HDD: Don't look only at the size, this time the brand also counts a lot! Look for Western Digital! At the moment they are the world leader in this business.
Screen Size: 15.6" is enough. You also have to think about resolution. Smaller than that and you have 2 icons that occupy all your Desktop Space. Bigger than that and you will buy a monster hard to carry around.
Color: Please... that is a personal pleasure... i like mine black... But please don't look for the pink Sony Vaio's (lady's you know what i mean!). It's just some paint... i can do that pink on any brand with a can of spray-paint.
