on my personal observation from years of rendering services... one should always bear in mind, that it's not proper to ask for too much until he/she gets to prove one's personal worth.
if a company has reasonable management in it, the proper compensation comes later to those who deserved it.
if its dificult for a management to see ones' value, there's always a chance to step out and look for another...
for a first timer, it's ok.
