If you were to approach the US Embassy, I would suggest that you can simply tell them the truth. As a US citizen you are entitled to their full assistance regardless of the reason for finding yourself in this position. They deal with every type of domestic situation imaginable on a daily basis, and I don't think that you need to worry about them judging you or prying into your personal life. If you explain your situation as it is, they will be sensitive in how they deal with you.
Repatriation, is not 'deportation'. It is a financial transaction whereby they will provide you with a loan to purchase a ticket back home where you will simply walk off the plane as a paying passenger, the same as everyone else. Nothing bad will happen to you or your husband as a result other than you will have to repay the loan within an agreed timeframe. They will not be interested in the domestic issues which have led up to this situation and you will most certainly not be penalised in terms of being detained or locked up in any way.
In fact, if you were crazy enough, you could even travel back here in the future!!
