I have checked with the US Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/emergencies/emergencies_1212.html
and they tell me that if you approach the US Embassy in Doha, they can arrange a repatriation loan, which will allow you to travel back to the US on a commercial flight.
If you want to verify this, you can either phone/visit the US Embassy 974 4496 6000 (I couldn't get them by phone this evening!), or phone the Bureau of Consular Affairs in US directly - 001 202 501 4444.
Sorry that you're in this difficult situation, but please realise that you are not trapped, and there are people who can help you.
PS - Reading between the lines, I think you may be able to arrange this without any officials impacting on your husband...
