You can come on a visit visa, and do visa runs after it expires if you don't find work. You cannot apply for a "permanent" visa - your employer provides the work visa and helps with residency - you can't do that on your own.
It is an expensive place to live if you have no income, you can't rent a "regular" flat as you don't have residency so it would have to be a hotel apartment. You can drive on your country's driver's license for (I think) 10 days - no longer in a rented car, you can't buy a car and get it registered without residency.
