saad, it is cultural. In other cultures even parents take care of themselves,and don't expect or want to be taken care of by their children's families.
Now, when I say taken care of I mean they do not expect and often don't want to live with their children's families or expect to be given money by them.
Of course there are some families that do all live together or help their parents financially, but this is not something "expected".
The "extended" family is simply not something common in some cultures.
That does not mean that they don't interact with each other, of course they do, but there is neither finacial obligation nor pressure on having parents live with their children.
