They did not come third out of 1500 students. They came 3rd in one category - there were 17 categories.
There were 3 overall winners - 1st and 2nd went to students from USA, 3rd place to Thailand.

Not to denigrate the achievments of the Pakistani girls involved but it did seem as if the news story quoted in the OP was a wee bit redacted.
