alexam have you been to Ireland recently?? Alive and kicking is definitely not how I would describe it...more like freezing cold and everyone struggling with the effects of the recession! As a fellow Irish ex-pat in my 2nd year in Doha (Granted i'm not a hairdresser), I think it'd be well worth the shift just for the experience of living in a completely culturally different environment. Sure there's gonna be things about here that will do your head in (driving for example) but if you're going to be better off than if you stayed at home, go for it. And yes, the cost of living isn't exactly low here but you learn to live within your means...the weather is great, the social life is great, and Qatar is a great base for travelling...hope this helps!
