Smoke buddy where did you get your phone from? Mine is a Vodafone 3GS and I am on Virgin Mobile (which as we all know is Qtel) SIM, and I successfully upgraded to 4.1 without any problems.
Did your's come from an unofficial supplier, has it been jail braked?
